about home remedies and handy tips

I have always loved those old tips from my mom and grandmother.  Some are a bit on the wild side, but some actually work great.  I thought I'd compile a list of some handy tips.  I welcome tips from others.

I'll start with Bathrooms today and add more later!

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

My daughter when she was little had really long hair. The little missy would sneak gum and then fall asleep with it in her mouth..well it usually ended up in her hair....take a big glop of peanut butter and start rubbing..the gum comes out...but you do have to wash the hair LOL!

Godbless, Lysol works well too!!!

Weed Killer: Clorox..Pure..Spray it on in the morning that you will have a full day of sun and by evening whatever was green..ain't green no more. $1.00 a gallon at Dollar Tree. Just be Carefull what you spray it on!!! Less dangerous than Roundup and weeds-be-gone.

I'm very excited about this group. I'm a Home Economist, and a big DIYer in my spare time.

Does anybody have the WD-40 list? I have misplaced mine and would like another copy to go inside the cabinet.

For those that get "swimmer's ear" - don't waste your money on the store bought brands... Get a medicine dropper and fill 1/2 with rubbing alcohol and 1/2 white vinegar. Apply like regular swimmer's ear solutions. The alcohol dries the ear and the vinegar changed the pH so bacterial growth is inhibited.

To kill swarms of bee just mix up some dishwashing soap with water and put it in a spray bottle. The soap coats their pores and they die instantly. I got that from a guy that handles swarms of killer bees in Texas. To kill large Roaches- apply generous helping of size 12 heel to bug cranium.

I just found out Hydrogen peroxide will remove blood from my cotton clothes. I had been using lighter fluid for everything.

What do you guys do to get stains off the kitchen counter top? I've been using a paper towel soaked in clorox. Works a bit.

When shampooing your carpet, put about 1/4 cup of peroxide in the soap solution. It will brighten the carpet. Note: If you have a very dark carpet color, you may want to test a hidden area first!

What a great idea for a group!

Speaking of sticky stuff, try mayonnaise... for removing things bugs on car paint, and even tar.

I discovered this years ago when a roofer presented to the ER with hot tar stuck to his skin. The remedy for removal came from the cafeteria, and didn't cause him further harm.

Who would'a thunk it?!

I was given a little piece of advice the other day.... babies get ant bites? Rub some Windex WITH Ammonia on the bites... it takes the sting away and reduces the bites to where they wont pus up... anyone else hear of this one? I was a little shocked when I heard it... lol

How to remove a tick... Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

Clorox will kill fire ants. Spray a stream directly on the hill and watch it smoke. Keep spraying until you see the holes that the stuff will run down in.

Fire ant bites.....Rub pure amonia on them. Works for all ages. The windex with amonia is good but it's the amonia that does it.

For kitchen counters i use tilex.I have used stell wool soap pads works great in bathroom also.I use wisk on my clothers with grease stains or any thing else rub in a little on spot wash as usualy stain comes right out. This has worked on grass stains etc for me.

get permanent marker off with either a magic eraser, hairspry, or fingernail polish remover. Works on all surfaces, glass, wood, carpet, couches... test an area before applying chemicals though.

Don't ask me how I know....

There are some great ideas that you listed ad well as some others that made some good comments from their basket of tricks. Will try to remember some of these. Have a great one.

Could anyone tell me if there is a way to remove paint (regular latex paint) from clothing?

Magic Eraser takes off permanent marker off of most surfaces, especially computers & the monitors (My daughter made me figure this one out, after drawing all over the computer & screen!) Magic Eraser also takes any kind of stain off of kitchen counters, cabinets, regrigerator, etc. Also works on walls, floors, doors, you get the point! For RUST(and everything else,ie,soap scum) in toilets/bathtubs/sinks use 'BarKeepers Friend' (something like that) works wonders!!! My mom swears by VINEGAR to clean the bathrooms--If you can stand the smell, I think it works pretty well.

Ohh and for those of you who are scared of bugs, like myself, and hate to smush them, here is my secret. My husband thinks I'm crazy but if I see a bug, I will go grab any kind of cleaner and spray away! The bug usually dies instantly, but sometimes you have to soak it. lol hey it works!!!

if you have some extra sticky and stuck on food on your dishes or pots and pans, especially a crock pot, anything you usually have to scrub, run some hot water and put in a dryer sheet, let it soak for 30 minutes..you can check it...anyhow, you will be able to wipe it off with your finger...NO scrubbing at all.

and magic erasers also work on microfiber material, at least with my experience. my kids colored on our couch with ink pens and crayons and i scrubbed with the magic erasers and once i got the marks off i went back with a wet rag and wiped the spot smooth and let it dry.

alcohol will get permanent marker off. and take ahir dryer to old bumper stickers and registration stickers.

I've been away for a while, but I wanted to let everyone know that I've made everyone an editor. Sorry I've been slow!

Looking forward to more handy tips. There are some great ideas here! Keep them coming!

I am a newbie, but having to pinch pennies and kill bugs bought about this - we had flies in the house, whenever we opened the door, they would just pile in. It was horrible. One day I was in the bathroom fixing my hair and this fly would not leave me alone. In desperation I sprayed it with hairspray! It worked! I guess since it is sticky, it made him unable to fly (thus making him a "walk" instead of a "fly") Anyway, he dropped to the floor, I took some toilet paper, picked him up and tossed him down the drain. Now it is all I use to kill flies with. Just be careful not to spray randomly or else everything in the room will end up sticky!!

Does anyone know an inexpensive way to kill dandelions? My yard is getting overrun with them. Have tried weed-be-gone, but they just shrivel up for a while, but come right back. I tried digging them up, but after the 20th one, my arms gave out!! Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

hmmm....good group. my 2 cents for now-when i had a new shower and glass door put in, i used rain-x before i even used it. i use arm and hammer shower spray every time i use it. ya all might not believe me or think it is gross but, no soap scum, no water spots and i haven't had to clean it yet. the shower yes but not the door. i would imagine it would do the same thing if used after the door has been scrubbed down really good.

alright-one more. got this off of craiglist-yes i did!!! lol free recipe for weedkiller. 1-gallon of white vinigar-1 cup of table salt- 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap. mix well and don't get it on anything you don't want to kill. IF SOMEONE TRIES THIS BEFORE ME, LET ME KNOW HOW IT DID!!

Oh Momof3inNC! I'm so glad to hear somebody else is like me with bugs! I am absolutely terrified of them and can't stand to step on them either. In my ears and on my feet (even if I wear ear plugs and 16 layers between my foot and the bug!) that crunch sound and feel will set me off so bad I have nightmares! I will go thru it seems like a half a can of spray on one bug! I've even been known to spray one that's bigger than usual till the can runs out, then covering it with a cup that I can't see thru and leaving it there for 3 weeks till my husband comes home! Then I get HIM to pick it up and insist that the cup goes in the outside trash with it! And yes, my husband is convinced I've got more than one screw loose upstairs!

I saw where somebody had asked how to get rid of dandelions. I found one product that worked fantastic in my front yard. It's a weed & feed type fertilizer. I also got a hint from somewhere else that I'm trying on one dandelion now. Someone said to put a vinegar/dishsoap solution on it. I didn't use the dishsoap, but I poured some straight vinegar on one. I'll let you know if it works! I hope so because I'd rather use that in the back yard where the dogs are.

I hope Lynddsy got more information before she tried the recipe for weed killer she mentioned. I don't know yet if it works, because I'm just now trying the vinegar part. But I did read that the salt is to be used ONLY in areas where you don't want anything at all to grow for a minimum of 2 years! I plan on using that on my gravel driveway. But from the information I got, the same recipe minus the salt is supposed to work in the rest of the yard. Just not next to your plants as it'll kill them too.

OK one last one from me for today! For cleaning spots out of carpeting, I have a product that is absolutely amazing! It works not just on new spots, or fresh spots, but even on spots that have been there for many years! And it uses no chemicals whatsoever! Straight tap water! It's a Super Steamer. I don't know if any particular brand is better or worse than the other. I've had mine for about 6 or 8 years and just recently discovered how well it works on spots!

I need help with something and I hope someone out can come up with a solution. One thing tho, this is a project I will be doing by myself, so try to keep in mind I can't lift anything real heavy or awkward. Can anyone tell me how I can get large mirrors down that have been glued to the wall? I have 3 of them 48"x36", 36"x 24", and 2 are 48"x48". The walls behind them are plaster. I sure hope someone can help me on this!
