about mentor

I am a freethinker...a scientific naturalist, if you will.

Freethought: a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic and not be influenced by authority, emotion, tradition, or dogma.

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered...

Religion is answers that may never be questioned...

Politically I would self-identify as a moderate, though some other golo members might still consider me a "moonbat." At times my political views tend to be more Libertarian, which is one reason I have so much admiration for Thomas Jefferson.  It seems political points of view are treated as stereotypical caricatures by many members. It's always easier to attack your own cartoonish version of the other person's views than to understand what the other person's views actually are.

One of my favorite pastimes is studying the philosophers of history, especially in the area of religion. I spent years mentally "at sea" on the topic, knowing my Methodist upbringing wasn't ringing true in my mind...yet not being willing to entertain the possibility that what I had believed all my life might not really be true. I came across the writings of a man named Robert G. Ingersoll, and realized I had stumbled on what I was looking for. If you have never seen or read any of his speeches, do yourself a favor and do so! You can find his work (among others) at www.infidels.org  He echoed all my unspoken sentiments about everything that was wrong with Christianity.

Why I Am An Agnostic  (1896)

About the Holy Bible     (1894)

I floated for a short while in the deist realm, along with the likes of (the much maligned) Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. After more study of the theist/non-theist debate, and soaking up all the modern evolutionary biology I could get my hands on, I began to realize that the universe is explainable without a god as a first cause...in fact it was more convoluted to insert a complex un-caused being at the beginning! Ockham's razor chops away the unnecessary complexity and leaves a simple conclusion: The universe, in some form or other, has always existed. A hard concept for us to grasp, but much simpler than a creator god who was there when it started - but who had done "god only knows" before that! (pun intended)

The hardest part of letting go of God is letting go of the idea of an afterlife...we all somehow feel we should continue on forever, even after our bodies die. I came to realize that this life is all we have. This bothered me for a bit, but it makes a lot more sense than tripping off into an eternity of existence after just a quick 'blip' of a biological life. Epicurus long ago noted that death need not be feared..."If I am here, death is not! When death comes, I shall not be here." Why fear something we will never "share the room with", so to speak? Mark Twain brought his wit and common sense to the topic as well when he said, "I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it never inconvenienced me a bit!" I expect it will be the same for all of us as well. My memory of 2112 will be the same as my memories of 1812! :-) The belief that our lives are just a quick prelude to some vague eternity to come later robs us of the full appreciation for the life we have right here, right now! When we can realize that this is our one and only life, it becomes all the more special and dear to us.

The other difficult part of letting go of religious belief is realizing that there will be no "final justice". Hitler is dead; simply dead. There is no hell for him to go to...his existence is ended except for the horrible memories of all the wrongs he perpetrated on humanity while he was alive. Horror was his legacy. Hopefully his miserable life will continue to teach us what the fruits of racial hatred and fascism really are.

You and I have our own opportunity to leave a legacy as well...hopefully a positive one! Maybe this is our shot at immortality after all - to leave behind good memories in the minds of people who knew us..to bequeath to the future all the best we could muster, seen through the eyes of our children.

But, I digress. If you want something to happen in your life, go out and make it happen! If you want justice, you will have to work for it. There is no celestial umpire that is going to call the game in your favor and fix all that was wrong with your life. Prayer is mind-talk and may help some people, but if you use your mind and your reasoning skills, one day you will realize that you're only talking to yourself.  YOU are the architect of your future! Be proud of your successes, and don't beat yourself up over your failures. Life is short, and precious....live it for what it is: a rare and special opportunity!

A few thoughts from Sam Harris.

It's not always easy to be secular in the U.S.

"Of all religions, the Christian should of course inspire the most tolerance, but until now Christians have been the most intolerant of all men." - Voltaire

"I would defend the liberty of consenting adult creationists to practice whatever intellectual perversions they like in the privacy of their own homes; but it is also necessary to protect the young and innocent. -  Arthur C. Clarke

The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma.  -  Abraham Lincoln

In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination.  -  Mark Twain

Fear is the mother of all gods. Nature does all things spontaneously by herself without their meddling. -  Lucretius

About the name Mentor: Years ago, when I was running a bbs, I had a user with this handle. He was an old guy who had a way of bringing just the right mix of wisdom and common sense to a discussion. He's long gone now, and I use the name mostly as a tribute to him.

We're setting sail for Jamaica tomorrow night!

All you have to do is ask a crew member.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM

not many in golo will get this, but I thought you might

eh oui!?!? Je parle bien francais aussi!

c'est mademoiselle! ;) un peu est bien!

ca va bien! et tu? (I have NO idea how to do accent marks on the computer! LOL!)

any time! LOL! I'm part French Canadian, so my french is strange and people from France don't actually understand me! LOL... accents or no accents. :)

Happy Halloween and AAAARRRROOOOO, AAAARRRROOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! to you!!!!!!!!!!!

"I was going to cross-post in oldschool's blog but I dont' feel like sending him spiraling off on a "global warming is a hoax" rant again. ;-)"

i hear that.

"We still have plenty of coal, but if we can't burn it without releasing torrents of CO2, we need another plan!"

i hear that even louder. put the coal miners to work on natural gas and building wind turbines and solar panels.

No problem mentor. I figured out what you meant; I was worried about the reaction it might illicit from those bitter about the results.

wanted to drop by and say hi! **HUGS**

Hi Mentor! My SIL called me yesterday from Raleigh to tell me that he was standing there and all of a sudden it started snowing! I didn't see the flakes but I heard about them,

Happy Thanksgiving, Mentor!!!

I view all religions the same, so Christianity and Heaven’s Gate are no different to me. Some are wackier than others, but all are wacky. I remember arguing with some nut cases on an astronomy newsgroup about Comet Hale-Bopp. Lots of people thought the government was covering something up, that the comet was under alien control, or some other nonsense. One claimed the “spiral” path in the sky was “proof”. This person couldn’t grasp, or wouldn’t grasp the explanation being retrograde motion, even after I demonstrated it with the planet Mars.

Christianity is the same. They have a set of beliefs based on no evidence, that they will NEVER deviate from, no matter how much logic and common sense may say otherwise.

From: http://www.wral.com/golo/profile/2597801

OldRebel deleted my comments and blocked me because I told him there was no way to prove a negative (he requested someone to prove God doesn’t exist). This type of mentality, and lack of understanding of the basic tenets of debate, discussion, and argument formation is why GOLO is such an intellectual wasteland. I’d rather simple minded folks just block me from the onset rather than me waste my time with what inevitably turns out to be a mental brick wall.

Good morning Mentor. Just popping in to say hi, it's been a while. I wish we could get some life back in the group.

I like what you said about suicide. Having suffered from severe post partum depression after the birth of my 2nd son, you hit the nail on the head. Thank goodness, 17 years later and a 3rd child, I'm fine. But things could so easily have gone the other way. The thoughts someone has when they are in the throughs of a depression are not rational and it is sad, indeed, and I agree that a loving God would not hold that against a person

Hi, I feel special . . . first time some one quoted me in a response (bubba and beer)! Have a wonderful day!

it's my opinion there are too many self professed experts on too many things. I'm of the belief that until you walk a mile in that person's shoes, you really shouldn't judge. I can vividly remember my thoughts during that very dark period in my life and I honestly thought that my family would be better off without me in their lives. Looking back, I can see how stupid that line of thinking is but at the time, I honestly thought it was true. I know now it was hormonal changes, we moved from Hawaiia back to NC, my newborn son had spinal meningitis, and I had major surgery,,,,too many life changes for my body to adjust to at one time. It was a rough period of about 18 mos but my son will soon be 17 and I've since had another with no problems. And I'm not prone to depression. But it makes me sensitive to those that are

what's the saying? everything happens for a reason? Maybe that's why mine happened, so I can help others understand how depression can feel on the other side

Haven't heard from you in a while. Everything OK?

I notice a recent GOLO member with the screen name of morsdeus. Do you suppose he would have an interest in our group (moribund though it has been lately)?

The natives do seem a bit restless since Jan 20...

Hey man, is there a way to make our blogs in the group publicly viewable to golo without opening up the group? I set it as public, but I'm not quite sure how it works with a private group.

Thank you Mentor!

I actually had to repost it. Our status as private (which I do not wish to change for the same reasons it was private to begin with) may have something to do with it, I dunno, but either way it got out there.

I SO admire and agree with your thinking. Your blogs are very thought-provoking.

I'm sending a friend request that I hope you will accept.

BTW, I'm Susan.

There's been some great blogs smacking down religion on here the last few days, huh? I saw Lightfoot had it cranking this morning - he seems to delight in getting folks riled.

I see that you are part of the "I Judge Poor Grammar" group. I should join! Some of the language here makes me cringe. Makes you wonder: even if people have advanced degrees, can you really call them "educated" if they can't spell or use proper grammar?

Susan

hey mentor... do I know you by another name?

oh no i don't think we know each other in real life not unless you work in a grocery store or a middle school. But I just thought maybe you had another name in the past on GOLO.. ;)

Long time, no talk! :-) How have you been? Hope all is well with you. Just wanted to pop in and say hello. Have a great week!

Beth

Hi Mentor! Thanks for the nice comment. So you don't think I'm a dayum dirty liberal?

Gosh, I hope you do! :P

Hey Mentor, thanks for commenting on my blog. I value your opinion, and always enjoy reading your thoughts.

I was wondering...A part of the reason I posted that blog was so that some people could see "witnessing" from a different perspective (the aggressive atheist part). I did not flat out point it out in the interest of peace, and the chance it would overshadow the rest of the blog. Do you think it was to suddle?

Good to see you around again!

If I am in the same company as you then I will consider myself lucky. I hold your posts in high regard. They always make me think, which is the highest compliment that I can give anyone.

It’s hard to dislike Osteen. He smiles. Whispers sweet nothings about God. Doesn’t talk about ANY of the negative aspects of sin. And that’s the problem. He’s a snake oil salesman that doesn’t seem like one. He has a great message. Unfortunately by only following the “god is good” message, he’s going to lead quite a few people astray. And of course, the ultimate goal is fame and money, which are pretty much in opposition to what Jesus had to say.

I HATE Benny Hinn!

I remember when Martin’s movie came out, but I have never seen it. I’ll have to check it out.

Hello! Long time no see...or you have been just not commenting in my blogs.

How are you?

Thank you! I love cats as well. Hope to see you around more often.

I checked out Petter Popoff’s website. Though with a name like that, I was kind of weary about what would, uh, pop up. :) I had never heard of him. But apparently he’s pretty big.

If I could lie and be hypocritical, I might would also consider a career in evangelism. I think I would do very well. I’ve even thought about how I could run it. I have a drug using/selling cousin that does very, very well by running a church.

But I’m just too honest, so I can’t do it.

"I have dabbled in creative writing off and on for years."

If I knew that, I'd forgotten it, but I'm glad to hear it! Let me or Sandra know if you're ever interested in joining some online and in-person writers' groups.

I know you like a good cartoon and I thought you would get a kick out of this.

http://www.irreligion.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/ath.gif

even as a christian, I still believe that science and the Bible are compatible. My granny raised me to always keep an open mind and I just don't see why God can't work with science, why the 2 have to mutually exclusive.

Take evolution for example,,my granny and I used to have long discussions on this. Just say for a minute that the account in Genesis is true, no matter what you believe just for the sake of argument, if it's true then you have Adam/Eve and Cain and Abel,,,and maybe more of Adam and Eve's children,,but after Cain kills Abel, he is exiled to the land of Nod where he finds himself wife....ok,,,from where?

maybe a nice upright more of the human looking apes??? (shades of Eddie Murphy here,,shaved the B down and taught her to speak),,,well there we have the missing link

in all things,,keep a sense of humor

seriously though, I don't see why things can't work together

well, I catch quite a bit of flack at church at times, and I consider myself an evangelical christian, as I was raised, as my Granny taught me to be, and my faith is strong. However, my Granny also taught me to always keep an open mind, try to exam things from ALL sides, and to put myself in the other persons shoes. She also taught me to take the Bible for what it is but not to read more into it than is there. Like I posted in yesterdays blog, Genesis 1 tells us, God created the heavens and the earth,,but does it tell us exactly how? There is MUCH room for interpretation there and when man gets to interpreting, all grades of interesting things develop. So why get bogged down in specifics when we haven't been given specifics? Sort of the don't sweat the small stuff philosophy. You'll also find I don't beat people over the head with my beliefs either. I'm supposed to show the love of Jesus not the fires of hell

Hey - I did the golo profile things and you were the only GOLO person I mentioned by name! It was in a very complementary way.

you can't help that there are a few nuts out. Just ignore. I tried to hold an intelligent conversation, once or twice, find out if this sad individual could use some help, but nope.

Now, I'm considering having my mother in law fitted in a nice white jacket,,come chat with us

rofl @ the oreo blog

Hope you have a great day!

Thank you for the oreo...yummy!

Have a wonderful weekend!
