I know a lady in Okla., Cindy D., who's son was in gov't schools and could not read at age 9. He did well in every other subject. The school system wanted to put him in a class of kids with learning disabilities (which in that school was truly retarded kids). She fought them and they could offer no other solution.
Cindy educated herself over the summer and began homeschooling him. He cont'd. to struggle reading for 18 months then "one day" it clicked for him. And by age 12 he was reading at his grade level.
My 11yr old daughter just took her EOG test & is reading at post-grad college level but is only 8 mos ahead of grade in math

The end result of education should be to teach the children how to learn. In accomplishing this goal, children are equipped to succeed in life because success at anything is dependent upon the ability to learn new skills. Unfortunately our American government schools goal for education is to produce certain test scores and that is a major reason so many of our young people today are not succeeding. They need a little extra help and don't know how to get it.
Related to the boy you mentioned I would highly recommend a book called "Better Late Than Early". I think you may find it very enlightening. :-)
