You will slow around Gorman St. and stay "crowded" past US-1, Cary Towne Blvd, and Hwy 54 exits. When you get to the Wade Ave Merge, the traffic will double (2 lanes of Wade Ave dump onto 40, but the lanes stay for a couple exits, and a new left lane appears around Harrison Avenue). Stay left and cruise on through.
You should be in good shape...as long as there are no wrecks :-D.
Have a great trip.

If you are coming through the Clayton/Smithfield area around 9:00-9:30AM you should be "ok", as long as there are no wrecks (always a caveat). There will be traffic, but I would think it will have let up a bit from the 7-9 traffic block (I'm on the road at 6:45-7:00 and it's not too bad). A couple radio stations in the area that will have traffic reports are 94.7 WQDR (country) and Mix 101.5 (80's & 90's general listening).

Listen to the traffic reports. On Fridays in the Summer there are usually wrecks somewhere on the Outer Loop between Lake Wheeler Road and the 440/40 split) because everyone will be going to the beach (Hwy 70 E and I-40E). There is usually a lot of congestion on the beltline around South Saunders Street and Hammond Road and people will try to "run" ahead in the 2 far left lanes, then cut back to get on 40E. After the 440/40 split, traffic slacks up a little bit, but with the new by-pass, I don't know what to tell you about the area past Jones Sausage Rd.
Also, check if Walnut Creek Amphitheater is having a concert Friday night...that will back up the Rock Quarry Road and Jones Sausage road exits onto the beltline (the far 2 right lanes around Hammond Road).
