Coming Home
I walk along the shore in the rain
That blows in
From the turbulent water,
Falling, not drop by single drop,
But in unbroken parallel slanting lines
From the sky to the sand.
The wind wants my hair;
It tugs it loose from its careful braid
And sets it free. Underneath my skirt
A squall catches and bells
And almost I am borne away.
In the shallow water
My feet are colored greenish pale;
The toes, far away below me,
Like fat sea worms,
Are one with the sodden sand.
So, I think,
Must my first forebears have looked
As they pulled their bodies painfully
Out of the sweet, nurturant fluid,
And felt their weight against the earth.
Around them their fellows died,
By hundreds, thousands, millions,
This shore was strewn
With desiccated husks.
Only these, my intrepid ancestors,
These few survived.
They made the evolutionary climb;
Their legs grew long;
Their lungs puffed full,
As resolutely they pulled away
From the mother water
And learned to live upland.
Now finally I have come home.
My heart echoes with the rhythm
Of the beat of waves against the shore.
My blood knows
That it is only sea stuff once removed.
Plunging deep in remembered birth fluid
I float, weightless,
Dropping my half century of care,
One with the rain and the sand
And the sea.
