As Night, my mother, cozened me,
Fed me with apples,
Laid chilly kisses on scalded lips,
I heard you;
Reached from dark to dark
A tentative hand
And found you,
Son of my Mother.
Then there were two.
We hemmed the night with words;
Seamed it with laughter; and you
Gave comfort, kindness, gentleness,
Unimportunate, limitless,
Refusing my tenders of return,
Clinging to your emptiness
With tenacity born of pain
Barely to be endured.
Your comfort came at last,
Not from me,
But from otherwhere.
These days,
It makes me glad
To look at you.
I have no words
For what we share .
Take this from me, at least;
This small, belated gift,
As minimal return.
