about ken d.
I enjoy discussing all the topics you’re not supposed to talk about at the dinner table (politics, religion, etc.), plus sports (which I think my mom would have said was OK, as she grew up watching Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play for the Yankees). My idealism took a hit when the Dodgers and Giants moved to California.
I’m a little too old to be called a Baby Boomer. This used to bother me before I became eligible for Senior discounts. I grew up in a home where “Democrat” was a dirty word. My interest in politics dates to when I worked on Barry Goldwater’s campaign. I still admire his principled stand on many issues, and have not forgotten the hatchet job the media did on his campaign (if you remember, he was the one who would take us to war in Vietnam if he were elected!).
I tend to devalue the opinions expressed by those who use the words “conservative” and “liberal” as nouns instead of as adjectives.
Because of my Catholic upbringing, I studied a lot of religion (almost enough for a minor in college). As a result, I no longer follow my Catholic upbringing.
You can’t always tell what I believe by the positions I’ll defend. I like the mental challenge of arguing for either side of an argument. This also reflects my belief that rarely is there a “right” answer to any argument when two or more thoughtful, intelligent people disagree. When one or both parties are just parroting slogans or propaganda, not so much.
I’m a major fan of college sports, and will watch the pros during the playoffs. I cheer for all three triangle ACC teams, and when they play each other I just hope for an exciting game. A little trash talk is OK, as long as it’s witty and not hurtful, but I’m turned off by childish and repetitive comments.

Our teachers deserve better. Over the years, when I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt when my children complained about them, the result was usually better for both of them.
I just hope that, if these allegations prove to be exaggerated, this particular teacher will be as publicly exonerated as she was embarrassed.
The saddest part of all this is a function of the technological age we live in. One day, should her children choose to google their mom, this story will appear. That damage has already been done.
