Here's the difference. A man in line at the soup kitchen is the real deal. I man on the side of the road with a "will work for food" sign is the faker.
I came out of a restaurant once, and these homeless guys came toward us. I was ready to say NO when they asked me for money. He asked me if I would buy him something to eat, with sincerity, like he was really just hungry. I went to the food mart next door and bought them both sandwiches, potato chips and a drink. To me that was different than asking for cash.
I do think a lot of homeless are that way by choice. If I lost my job tomorrow, I would find SOMETHING else asap.

First, if you were still paying for your insurance and did not know it had been cancelled, and have documentation to back this up, most Judges will not charge you any court costs. At the most, he/she may charge you the min. $25 admin fee.
But be sure to take adequate paperwork with relative dates with you! Worst case, I believe Wake County court costs are up to about $125. Hope that helps...
