Also, many of them suggested hand-pollinating the flowers by pulling off a male bloom and wiggling it around inside the female flower to spread the pollen around (as bad as that sounds).

Sounds good about Matthew. Spelling is actually no longer emphasized in school--partly due to the availability of computers and spell-check, and partly because of the realization that some people, no matter how intelligent, just never learn to spell and will need to look words up all their lives. Reading a lot helps because familiar words become ingrained, but the old 20-words-every-Friday tests? Useless--right out the window by Monday.

Garden is nothing compared to yours, but at least I'm getting some harvest. Cherry tomatoes ripen daily, have gotten a bunch of peppers and peas, and now finally picked my first big tomato. I should have planted squash and corn like you did.

Any other ways I can fight these things? I also found a slug at the base of one of them yesterday. I took him to another part of the yard just in case. :)

I don't mind the slugs as long as they don't hurt the pumpkins! We've had 2.5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, so it might be a few days before I water them again.

I know what you mean -- I don't use pesticides on stuff that I plan to eat. Pumpkins? They are more for decoration and for fun this year. Maybe if they work out well, next year I'll make some for pumpkin pie or bread or something.
