about elcid89

With all of the complaining that goes on here (some of you honestly seem incapable of doing anything else BUT complaining ...), GoLo has become depressing.

With the general trend towards the banal and inane, GoLo has become a waste of my time.

What is it about this place, which has so much promise of bringing people together to discuss ideas and learn from one another, that it brings out the worst in people instead?

You'll forgive me if I take my leave of it.

I'm talking about my Father. Sorry

elcid89, in response to your post;

Statement 1. I think everyone is outspoken when it's something their passionate about.

Statements 2 & 3 are about the same, and I agree. I didn't come down here to change anything, nor do I complain about the differences.

The only thing I do is remind people that war has long been over for well beyond 100 years. It might be time to move on.

I was being funny. I was saying that I would love to switch positions. I would love to hand you my job for a day was what I was meaning. No "dirt slinging". I'm a nice guy.

During our discussion of the beach fire earlier this month, several of us wondered why teenagers were at that house, unsupervised, and hypothesized that there was most likely alcohol involved.

This has been verified. All of the persons there were underage, and NC's Chief Medical Examiner today released a report verifying that 6 of the seven victims were inebriated at the time of their deaths, with BAL's ranging from 0.16 to 0.29%. The survivors themselves have ventured guesses that carelessly discarded smoking materials probably caused the blaze.

So here's my question: why, again, were a bunch of teenagers partying at a house & drinking alcohol underage without any adult supervision? Where were any responsible adults?

Say what you will. This could have been prevented, and if it's a tragedy, it's one of stupid and careless disregard for due diligence and proper oversight. Maybe now parents will start taking responsibility for their children.

i"m keeping my eye out on John Paul. Is that a good thing??

He's running on the republican ticket but a lot of his ideals are for more independence from the government....He running on the idea of getting big business out of government and government out of big business and giving power back to the working class....He has a web site ...

Lordy elcid-- I had my mind on the pope I guess. I meant John Paul...

I;ll get it right in a minute RON PAUL

That's ok I understand. I've not dedicated my self to any one candidate yet. I am trying to really do a good job of making a wise choice. We just don't have much to work with. I don't want another rich candidate pleasing all the big corporations in trade and every other laws that gets passed. There are no independents running that I know of....

Great blog today, Elcid. I like what you had to say :)

"10% is an Old Testament standard which, according to most of the posters in here, Christians aren't obligated to follow. The arguments get creative, but are mostly inventive reasonings for why most of Leviticus (except the parts they like) aren't applicable anymore.

Pretty amusing."

Obligated or not, my point to Anti-Welfare was that this is not an isolated case of a church just pulling that number out of the air. It's a standard, whether people meet it or feel obligated. Anti-Welfare made it sound like this particular church set an arbitrary "fee" to its members, but in just about any Christian church, it's not an arbitrary number. It might actually be similar to a fee in some (and that's probably true with this one), but it's not required in all of them.

I can't speak to the rest of the OT and whether it's applicable.

Thanks Elcid, for answering my question.

"Thanks Elcid, for answering my question."

Excellent posts on the bible in school story. I am enjoying your posts a great deal!

elcid89,

I hope you have a fantastic trip and holiday. I especially enjoyed your post tonight dealing with the bible issue in Cumberland County. Again, have a wonderful trip.

Have a great trip!

Thought your posts were very well put and quite enlightening on the Cumberland County story.

Very glad to have someone with such eloquence posting on WRAL.

Gives us Liberal Yankee Democrats something to look forward to!

:)

Hi elcid,

Yesterday we were discussing socialtal norms and socialtal evolution...today there is an article on a guy shooting a traffic camera and a poster put up the following link about UK traffic cameras:

http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm

Since you were espousing the EU as a model for sociatal growth, I was wondering what you thought of this. While I agree with you about challenging the sociatal norms, I think there is a reason that society also needs structure. You always talk about dumbing down to the lowest common denominator intellectually, I also believe that, left unchecked, man has a lowest common denominator morally that would be achieved. No matter how much you slam religion, it has a positive effect on the behavior of people in general in that it provides moral structure. Granted, there are extremists present who will always provide the counter balancing negative impact on society through extreme behavior.

I read the headline and assumed, my fault. There was no reason to be nasty. I would like an apology, but I sincerely doubt I'll get one.

Why do you insult the people you debate? You're as bad as Steve Crisp.

Hi. Thanks for your support of my grammar request! I did not realize it would offend people so much to be asked to use proper English!! I guess it's good that I didn't tell them I have degrees in English and Journalism. I'd have been virtually hanged. And I suppose it was futile anyway. They continue to put apostrophes in words that don't need them. And don't get me started on "your" versus "you're."

Oh well, I guess if being intelligent and paying attention to detail and not wanting to make mistakes makes me elitist, I'll take that.

Thank you Elcid for your kind words, I truly appreciate it.

"Is there a specific example of that you are referring to?"

Most recently DandyJenn, but it comes out a lot when you debate any neocon. The resemblance to Crisp debating a lib is eerie. (I know, them's fightin' words.)

Well, I appreciate your candor and your open-mindedness in your response. Thanks for hearing me out, too. I've just never been into humiliation, so I tend to jump on it when I see it. I had the same aversion to it in my college classes - once told a prof I was paying him. That didn't go over so well.

What was the chain letter? I missed that one - I don't get on here every day.

Is your ID a reference to the old movie?

Sorry about that...was thinking how most places "public" hate to be seen in negative ways on the News...scumlords, bad reviews, when places do not make good on their services, etc.

I pulled this from one of your posts, about the benefit of religion to a society:

"It provides moral limitations on the individual. The strictures that you attribute to it in the sense of generally accepted principles are not unique to it. Religion is not the sole fountain of morality or genial social behavior. In general, I believe that prosperity is. People are far more likely to behave in acceptable ways when their requirements of life are met. Remove prosperity, as in the Middle East, and religion doesn't fill the gap at all."

Amen. 'IF YOU WANT PEACE, WORK FOR JUSTICE.' I'm a believer myself, but thousands of cooperative, peaceful civilizations have peopled the earth without elaborate religion to keep them mindful of the rights of their fellow citizens.

PS: do you eat Thai at Sawasdee on Capital? They're grumpy, but the Tom Kha is so delicious!

Elcid--Thank you for this information. I am not after anything except I do not think this man should be made manager if this is how he acts. We have some very elderly people who are medicated and would sleep through a thunder storm. I think of him maybe messing with them and they aren't even awake. I've never experienced this elcid, and it made me feel bad. Tomorrow I start on checking into the no contact restraint and I will contact the district managers boss. I don't know how to reach the owners. These are contracted managing companies that handle his buildling. I will start with the top and that would be them. I hope it doesn't backfire and he says I am lieing and they evict me, but I can't ever trust this person around me. You'd think my conduct for the 5 years should count for something comparing to a man whose been in this building 5 days...Thank you again. You had the best advice I think...

Thank You and I do completely understand...you are totally right!!!

Sorry for the delay...I had to go to my daughter's Cross Country Banquet and just got in a bit ago :)

Thanks for that website elcid89, I appreciate it! :)

Elcid, I always bow before your superior IQ and education, but this time I think there is more to it than you know. Humbly and respectfully, LOlly.

/* Lolly bows */

something really is going on. something serious. If you have not been on in the afternoon this past week, stuff happened. I am wrong a lot, just ask my teenagers...but this is not Steve's usual ego stuff...at least...I do not think so. sigh

People are being threatened..their jobs, their marriages

You got it!!!!!!!!!

And I think steve is on the side of the angels on this one.

mitigating circumstances...in his case,,you are aware of?

It's All Good. (example of short, sweet and to the point. LOL)

elcid89, I dont know your age or if by chance you knew them, but, my aunt and uncle were attorneys in Winston Salem. Their daughter (my cousin) was an attorney also. Their name was Randolph. Did you by chance know them? His name was Clyde and hers was Doris and their daughter was Rebekah. Just curious. I normallly would not have mentioned their names on here, but they are all deceased, so I think it doesnt matter so much anymore. Hope you are having a good weekend.

Interesting, I am not familiar with my Uncle Clyde's argument in 68. I was 12 then. He did represent our family against the railroad after my Grandfather was killed in a truck/train accident in Lilesville in 66. That was unsuccessful, as our family found out, the railroad had unlimited resources. Is there any published work about Clyde's argument you mentioned? I would be curious to read it. He was a stern man, I remember when they used to come to Moore County to visit, I was always scared of him...LOL In retrospect, he was a very smart man that did not tolerate people well that didn't use their brain. Again, I hope you are having a good start to your weekend, it is turning cold here. Supposed to drop to 20 below by tomorrow for a few days.

Thank you elcid. I called my mother and asked her if she remembered that as well. She said she thought she remembered that he had been before the Supreme Court, but she could not remember in regards to what. According to her, he did take many cases like that. He also took my other Granddaddy's case when he was denied some disability payments and won that case. She also told me that Aunt Doris did alot of work for folks that did not have the means to get a decent defense. I rmemebered that she also ran for a Judgeship back in the early 70s but was not successful. Thanks again for that link, that was interesting.

I hope you know I was being silly by my post. I find it hard to be serious in here sometimes...well really most of the time. When I get serious it usually turns into a heated debate. So I like to stay light and superficial. :) Have a good evening.

Thank You!!!

Well good! Sometimes my cute sarcasm is hard to interpret via the web. I need to put my feelings in {parenthesis} so people know when I'm being funny or not so funny. Ready for the holidays? 23 more days -- woo hoo! My son will be gone for Xmas this year, he'll be 3 by the time it rolls around, and still not sure what the big deal is about Santa! Have a great Sunday!!

I TOOK CARLINS NAME OFF

Frankly, I am very disappointed in you. I am not the one who has continued this ridiculous juvenile game. I was the one who received a threatening phone call last Monday and since then I felt that things had escalated to a point where it needed to STOP immediately. Since I did not send you any of the documentation I possess, and I have not spoken to you of this you obviously do NOT know the entire story and frankly – it is none of your business.

Had Lolly done a bit of homework she would have read that I said I LAID the foundation IN CASE THIS DOES NOT STOP…after being called on my phone and threatened, or attempted threat until I cut that person short. I have no intention of pursuing any case as long as I am left alone. Make THAT clear her since she obviously can not or does not read well, and make sure she extends that to her “friends”. cont'd

As a "college professor" I would have hoped you have some professional ethical standards that would prevent you from sticking your nose into a foolish situation especially when you know only one side of it. At a minimum you could have asked me about this before deciding to post your words on my profile.

As far as I am concerned, this is over unless the fools who have been perpetuating it choose to continue. I will NOT be threatened by anyone, not over the phone, by email or in person. When I fear for my safety it is the time to act and I did. If this does not stop NOW, and I am threatened again in any manner then I will proceed as I see fit within the realm of the legal and judicial system. Now - stay out of my business and act like a professional, you Sir have proven a tremendous disappointment. I ask that you also leave me alone from here forward.

Interesting. I didn't name any individuals -- only anonymous screen names in a public forum. But given your reaction, perhaps I am on to something here...

I'll have to check with people to see if there is a commonality among originating IP numbers in the various posts. Perhaps there IS a connection?

I always understood defamation to be the willful statement made against an individual such that the individual suffered personal harm. The individuals in question are all anonymous and, as such, can not suffer harm apart from their status on this board.

Further, an easy means is given by WRAL to eliminate any offensive posts simply by hitting the abuse button. So any text would be considered transient at best.

Further, defamation requires that statements made are either untrue or that they do not represent an opinion by the writer.

Then there is Keith-Smith v. Williams in England last year which their court found rose to the level of libel. However, Williams was being directly accused as a child rapist and racist if I remember correctly. Williams was also a public figure running for office. Nor have any statements risen to the level of Hustler v. Falwell.

In any case, anything I have said clearly comes under opinion and fair comment.

One more thing. I have always found that the threat to use an attorney with respect to the internet is either:

1. The ravings of a lunatic.

2. The idle threat of someone who is so immature that they can not keep up with arguments no matter how heated or personal they get. Or

3. Coming from attorneys or pseudo-attorneys themselves who like to throw their supposed weight around.

In any case, I have seen some pretty viscious things said in different places over the years with threats to sue and not once did anything happen -- even when an attorney was involved on the receiving end of things.

Over the years, it has become an idle threat to claim that a lawsuit is pending as the result of statements made. Usenet pretty well debased that as a legitimate point of contention.

I am also aware than anyone can sue anyone else for anything. But it would be interesting to see an attorney actually present as plaintiff in a frivilous lawsuit.. Im sure the NC bar would love that one.
