about elcid89
With all of the complaining that goes on here (some of you honestly seem incapable of doing anything else BUT complaining ...), GoLo has become depressing.
With the general trend towards the banal and inane, GoLo has become a waste of my time.
What is it about this place, which has so much promise of bringing people together to discuss ideas and learn from one another, that it brings out the worst in people instead?
You'll forgive me if I take my leave of it.

Statement 1. I think everyone is outspoken when it's something their passionate about.
Statements 2 & 3 are about the same, and I agree. I didn't come down here to change anything, nor do I complain about the differences.
The only thing I do is remind people that war has long been over for well beyond 100 years. It might be time to move on.

This has been verified. All of the persons there were underage, and NC's Chief Medical Examiner today released a report verifying that 6 of the seven victims were inebriated at the time of their deaths, with BAL's ranging from 0.16 to 0.29%. The survivors themselves have ventured guesses that carelessly discarded smoking materials probably caused the blaze.
So here's my question: why, again, were a bunch of teenagers partying at a house & drinking alcohol underage without any adult supervision? Where were any responsible adults?
Say what you will. This could have been prevented, and if it's a tragedy, it's one of stupid and careless disregard for due diligence and proper oversight. Maybe now parents will start taking responsibility for their children.

Pretty amusing."
Obligated or not, my point to Anti-Welfare was that this is not an isolated case of a church just pulling that number out of the air. It's a standard, whether people meet it or feel obligated. Anti-Welfare made it sound like this particular church set an arbitrary "fee" to its members, but in just about any Christian church, it's not an arbitrary number. It might actually be similar to a fee in some (and that's probably true with this one), but it's not required in all of them.
I can't speak to the rest of the OT and whether it's applicable.

Yesterday we were discussing socialtal norms and socialtal evolution...today there is an article on a guy shooting a traffic camera and a poster put up the following link about UK traffic cameras:
http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm
Since you were espousing the EU as a model for sociatal growth, I was wondering what you thought of this. While I agree with you about challenging the sociatal norms, I think there is a reason that society also needs structure. You always talk about dumbing down to the lowest common denominator intellectually, I also believe that, left unchecked, man has a lowest common denominator morally that would be achieved. No matter how much you slam religion, it has a positive effect on the behavior of people in general in that it provides moral structure. Granted, there are extremists present who will always provide the counter balancing negative impact on society through extreme behavior.

"It provides moral limitations on the individual. The strictures that you attribute to it in the sense of generally accepted principles are not unique to it. Religion is not the sole fountain of morality or genial social behavior. In general, I believe that prosperity is. People are far more likely to behave in acceptable ways when their requirements of life are met. Remove prosperity, as in the Middle East, and religion doesn't fill the gap at all."
Amen. 'IF YOU WANT PEACE, WORK FOR JUSTICE.' I'm a believer myself, but thousands of cooperative, peaceful civilizations have peopled the earth without elaborate religion to keep them mindful of the rights of their fellow citizens.

Had Lolly done a bit of homework she would have read that I said I LAID the foundation IN CASE THIS DOES NOT STOP…after being called on my phone and threatened, or attempted threat until I cut that person short. I have no intention of pursuing any case as long as I am left alone. Make THAT clear her since she obviously can not or does not read well, and make sure she extends that to her “friends”. cont'd

As far as I am concerned, this is over unless the fools who have been perpetuating it choose to continue. I will NOT be threatened by anyone, not over the phone, by email or in person. When I fear for my safety it is the time to act and I did. If this does not stop NOW, and I am threatened again in any manner then I will proceed as I see fit within the realm of the legal and judicial system. Now - stay out of my business and act like a professional, you Sir have proven a tremendous disappointment. I ask that you also leave me alone from here forward.

I'll have to check with people to see if there is a commonality among originating IP numbers in the various posts. Perhaps there IS a connection?
December 2, 2007 11:14 p.m.
Further, an easy means is given by WRAL to eliminate any offensive posts simply by hitting the abuse button. So any text would be considered transient at best.
Further, defamation requires that statements made are either untrue or that they do not represent an opinion by the writer.
Then there is Keith-Smith v. Williams in England last year which their court found rose to the level of libel. However, Williams was being directly accused as a child rapist and racist if I remember correctly. Williams was also a public figure running for office. Nor have any statements risen to the level of Hustler v. Falwell.
In any case, anything I have said clearly comes under opinion and fair comment.

1. The ravings of a lunatic.
2. The idle threat of someone who is so immature that they can not keep up with arguments no matter how heated or personal they get. Or
3. Coming from attorneys or pseudo-attorneys themselves who like to throw their supposed weight around.
In any case, I have seen some pretty viscious things said in different places over the years with threats to sue and not once did anything happen -- even when an attorney was involved on the receiving end of things.
Over the years, it has become an idle threat to claim that a lawsuit is pending as the result of statements made. Usenet pretty well debased that as a legitimate point of contention.
I am also aware than anyone can sue anyone else for anything. But it would be interesting to see an attorney actually present as plaintiff in a frivilous lawsuit.. Im sure the NC bar would love that one.
