about elcid89
With all of the complaining that goes on here (some of you honestly seem incapable of doing anything else BUT complaining ...), GoLo has become depressing.
With the general trend towards the banal and inane, GoLo has become a waste of my time.
What is it about this place, which has so much promise of bringing people together to discuss ideas and learn from one another, that it brings out the worst in people instead?
You'll forgive me if I take my leave of it.

That's fine, but when someone like you attacks another user under the GUISE of honorable intentions (like merely wanting Golo rules to be enforced), I'm going to call you out on it every time.
Had you been up front about this being about TMedlin, I would have respected your honesty. But you tried to give yourself the appearance of taking the high road. Which you clearly weren't.
I don't ignore blogs. I look at them all. If I need to respond, I respond. I think that's how it works.

True - my wife has had a spinal fusion surgery and we cannot get coverage for her without it being under a group plan (i.e wea re currently "without"). I have first hand knowledge of "financial hardship" I believe the term to be...
There is no denying some very serious issues regarding health care cost - I stated in the same blog that I did not know how to fix it but I know for certain that the government has neither the WILL nor KNOWLEDGE required to truly fix the problem.
Besides, without any hobgoblins to rescue us from, how will they get into office?

I hope you’re doing well these days ....
I hate to admit it, but under my callous engineer exterior is a bit of an idealist.
Although I have provided expert testimony in my area of expertise (I’m a registered Electrical Engineer, presently the world’s oldest graduate student - well, maybe - working on a PhD in EE) I think that I still have a very idealistic and naive view of the legal system.
I suppose that I think of the legal system as a place where two men can go before an impartial arbitrator to reconcile their differences when they are unable to reach an agreement between themselves.
Personally, I don’t think that should be necessary at all. I have always been able to resolve my own problems, including a divorce, by trying to keep an open mind and continuing to talk about the problem ....
I know .... hopelessly idealistic, at least about some things ....
Have a good evening,

I think it is not in the interest of the state and that's the primary reason it's not happening.
"That said, it does need to occur, given the rate of cost increases and increasing limitation of access that are happening."
Agreed.
My fear is that the first "government program" will be disastrous and there is nothing so permanent as a "temporary" government program.

In engineering, quite a few of us have had their ‘bridges’ to fall. Myself, I carry a number of tooth marks....
So far (knock on wood) no one has sued me. I have been able to resolve all my difficulties – about 40 years worth – out of court. Some, I’ve had to pay for. I don’t feel bad about this at all: It’s arrogant to think you will never make a mistake.
MANY of my colleagues are very reluctant to admit error, even when it’s obvious to the casual observer on a galloping horse that it’s there. My philosophy has always been to admit the mistake, pay the price, and move on. (Aside: This doesn’t mean that I will willingly take responsibility for someone else’s errors or omissions ....)
It has brought me much success and, actually, very little grief.
I’m naive enough to believe that if everyone thought this way, life would be a LOT simpler ....

I am afraid that there are those that seem to be targeting individuals for deletion. I wish that was just some sort of stupid rumor but it appears that it is indeed true.
The culling of your old blogs and posts is just a way they may have decided to "flush" those that are undesirable to them.
Sick. I do believe I enjoyed being online more when there was a kind of intelligence barrier to entry. You needed at least a basic level to get online.
For those who think this is a valid method in targeting people, Please read Paradise Lost by Milton - Is it truly better to reign in hell than serve in heaven?

You are the most intelligent man on golo and with that, you also have a sense of humor. Rare for here.
I do hope management will look closely at the reports. I've never seen you post anything deemed inappropriate.

It seems that, since you began on golo, you have sought out conflict. You have said it is because you don't like the rules being applied differently to different people. I think it is because you miss the conflict that came with your profession.
Angela is not a judge and the rest of us are not jurors. What you are seeking is not affirmation of your beliefs, but validation that you have "won". You won't get it here.
I should also add that I have always had a very visceral reaction to bullies. When I was younger, that reaction manifested itself physically. As I got older, it manifested itself through my profession.
As long as you continue to use your education as a blunt instrument, I will continue to step in between you and those who can't aren't equipped to block the blows.
You have a great deal to offer in this forum. But yours is only one voice among many. You need to remember that.

I'm gonna add my 3 cents (adjusted for income tax increase here in NC today). ;)
I think that there are plenty of bullies at GOLO. Hell, I've probably upset someone before, and I don't really post much compared to many of the others around here. ;)
I like you. You're good people. It has always been my observation that people who are the most strongly opinionated are both the most entertaining AND the most likely to wind up being the targets of one another.
Sooo... if people aren't brave enough to step right up to your profile and tell you what they think, then take it as a compliment.
Prolly means they're scared of engaging you, because they don't feel intellectually capable of defending themselves if you choose to retaliate.
I mean that in the most flattering of terms.
Basically, you rock.
Good health, friend.
Namaste!

You certainly aren't the first person to ponder that question. The way I have learned to tolerate it, and even enjoy it most of the time, is to approach golo as a cultural anthropologist would approach field observations of another civilization. That is, to find a balance between being a detached observer and an active participant. Although I'm not an anthropologist or sociologist, sometimes I am fascinated by the social dynamics of an online community like this. Maybe that's also why I enjoyed Lord of the Flies so much!

If this is true, there's really no excuse for it. But it's also life. It's not always fair. Sometimes it's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know. There's a lot of truth to that.

I did get on you for being a bull in a china shop, but sometimes you let loose and you have a power of language and argument that overwhelms...remember that, please, for you words speak with authority and knowledge...and I had to moderate, I thought. Seems to me you took it with ease and went on with power and grace in phrases:
Something to consider though
THAT I agree with, although I
Ok, consider the alternative.
Well said. I find few things more
While I understand the basis ...
says a lot about them, IMO. (IMO softens you)
And I respect your devotion to this single issue, but...
...that are offensive and extremist besides race, friend.
And this is a good start,
The problem, IMO,
...to sidestep it? Please ...
Exactly, so does...
Not to disparage your own contribution, but...
That was big of you, Thanks again.

The big WHO study, found only one statistically significant thing "exposure during childhood was not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer." That wasn't reported until BBC forced its released. WHO still ignored their data and headlined the result of 16% increase in danger to spouses, which was in the insignificant, margin of error range of their study. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9776409?dopt=Abstract
