NC State Sports Website  I Write For

My Golf Blog

My Personal Motto: "Life's short.  Work hard.  Play harder."

First things first: I hate writing online profiles -- they remind me far too much of those silly high school assignments where you had to write a two-page autobiography.  How can you encapsulate an ongoing life in just a few words?

Where I Am From:  Originally, Cocoa Beach in Florida.  Yes, I have heard the "I Dream of Jeannie" jokes.  No, the town is not like that.  It is a mixed town of folks who work at Kennedy Space Center and is also a beach resort.  Cocoa Beach has some of the best surf on the Atlantic Coast of the US.  Good enough for a regular stop on the pro surfing tour.  Maybe you've seen the RonJon's stickers on people's cars?  That's my home town.

Anyway, I am from there because most of my family worked in the space industry at one time or another.  When you watch documentaries about Apollo, Gemini or Mercury, more than likely you will see one or more of my relatives.  I've seen my Mom, my Dad, my Grandfather and one of my Uncles.  Me, I saw every single Saturn V ever launched...in person.

Why I Am In NC:

When the Apollo program came to an end, my parents found better jobs and that brought us here to Raleigh.  We've been here since the mid-1970s.  I can almost call myself a native.  Almost.

What I Like:

* Travel - been to all fifty states.  Been to dozens of countries.  Some I would go back to in a second (California) and others I would skip.

* People - Everyone is interesting somehow.  Just keep in mind that interesting can have more than one meaning, like the old Chinese curse.

* Art - There is a lot to see and experience in this life.  Creating art is the best way to remember it.  If you have a camera, you are an artist.  Me personally, I write, photograph, design and once in a while play music.  I made my living briefly as a professional musician, but it wasn't the life for me.  Besides, you play music, you don't work music.

* The Sea and The Mountains: there are no finer places on this Earth than the Andes or Sierra Mountains and the Caribbrean Sea, and I have been to lots of places.  The Caribbean and the tall mountains all have bright colors and clean air.

Much as I love NC, sorry, our mountains are hills compared to the Andes and most of our coastline has been ruined by too many baby boomer shacks.  Same goes for my hometown's beaches too.  The beach shouldn't have high rises in the dunes.  That's what I think, anyway.

* Sports: I love golf, even if I am not that good.  Think golf isn't hard?  Then why does Tiger Woods still take lessons?

I also love to watch ACC sports and pro hockey.  I used to like racing before racing decided to sell its soul for the money.  I mountain bike, hike, water-ski and other sorts of stuff.  I used to be a skydiver (116 jumps) and a ski racer, but the bones are getting brittle and the price of an accident is too high nowadays.

And so forth and so on.  Read this far?  Wow! Goodness gracious, sakes alive, you really do need to get a life...(I'm kidding, simmer down)

I am not that interesting.  Move along, nothing more to see here!!!

Your post on the Airplane crash with the jumpers, was very informative.I learned alot..thx

U R very comical

Hi Charles,

My reference to Wiki regarding PE/Harris plant was not intended to be "the gospel" as such, but a resource for anyone who wanted more info on nuclear power in general, including specific plants.

As the spouse of a PE employee for 27 years, Wiki is certainly not my sole source of info, but it does offer neutrality, ergo, my reference to it.

Hope you don't need that qualified surgeon, for there's a saying in medicine that the "ones who can't qualify for internal medicine go into surgery". Choose carefully, very carefully! ; )

Have a great day.

Hey Charles, I'm the guy who comes in to fix your computers at tyco. Can you guess who I am?

Hi Charlesboyer: Your blog has been linked to the main eclipse story on WRAL.com. I suggested it to the news editors. Check it out, and keep the good blogs coming. http://wral.com/news/science/story/2455600/ -Angela

Wanted to say thanks for the great info on how to take pictures of the eclipse. I had to dig out my camera book and figured out how to change the settings and it seemed to work. The eclipse pics that are on the front page of GOLO were mine. With plenty of referencing your tips, I got a couple of good shots. The wind wasn't helping me, but I think I did ok.

Again, Thank you

The president of the club making the rain barrels can be reached by email at enhill@ncsu.edu Hope that helps!

Charles...I like your comments regarding the drought. It is frustrating that there are so many ignorant people around here that have no clue what they are talking about. They are probably outside watering their yards today.

Great blogging today Charles! -Angela

Can the ISS be seen from Greenville if I look west? Just curious.. would like to view it!

Joker,

Go to this site: http://www.spaceweather.com/flybys/?PHPSESSID=dljsda1hfas99l3c15u66vdbg6

Or to Spaceweather.com and look on the right side for "Satellite Fly-Bys"...enter your zip code and it will give you the time and co-ordinates to look. There are several coming over most weeks.

The Pier. Oh my god, I've been trying to think of the name of that bar forever! Thanks.

Charles,

consider it asked!

WHEN you have the time of course and THANKS !

I checked out the pic from your comment on sessy's blog, she had that look that said A: She is just sooo trashy or B: Wow, I wish mine looked like that..oh I shouldnt be looking! Great Pic.

NEWSFLASH - adults of all professions take liberties with people they shouldn't. NOT just teachers bro!

at least ben stein is smarter than moore

Just want to give you props on the comment on the maggie, guapa blog. I notice that no-one said anything about it at all. I enjoy a lively debate, but most of these people cant do it. Again, good job

yes, among other ventures, why do you ask?

yes - maybe you don't remember several months ago I asked you if you worked in "the Quay"... I didn't hear back from you but I figured there could only be one of you :)

I still see quite a few folks from there, from time to time. Only difference I see is people getting older, not having quite as much fun as we used to have, and there seems to be much better parking than when I was there!

Holy cow Batman! I didn't know that about the paper - then again, I've never bothered to research it's origins. You'd think - you'd THINK that if the African American community knew that, they would demand retrobutions from the newspaper, an apology and start a city wide ban on it's sales until said retrobutions were provided. Yet - it is a large thriving paper where journalist wouldn't know what journalism is if it bit them in the ...... they are all editorialist.

Wow...

You aren't kidding, that IS the most beautiful place. Thanks for sharing your photos. Gotta' go there one day.

Thank you so much for sharing those pictures. I can't wait until i get to visit it!

Good morning and thanks for the info. I copied your post to my page so I can go back and review the links. I stopped saving so I can pay off every credit card I owe on for the time being. It is going to take me at least 4 more months. I am paying off one credit card a month and then I can begin saving again. I know my score but I have not seen my report in about two years. I am going to request it around Dec or Jan of next year. By then all my accounts except for one should be 0. And I am trying to get my score up to something I feel is decent and respectable...LOL..Thanks for the info! I look forward to reading the links. I just want to be able to have a better understanding of all of this. Right now, I have not got a clue! Have a wonderful day!

I'm a big belgian fan. Went to the beer fest Saturday and by the time I got to the Saison Dupont it was all gone. I was however able to get some good samples from Duvel. They had a Grand Reserva that was outstanding.

Homebrewing for 20+ yrs? Wow. I've only been doing it for about a year and a half. I think I've done about 40 batches to date. I could talk to you all day about it.

I currently have a Henni clone in the fermenter. I used a Safale yeast(sa-33) that is supposed to produce good Belgian beers. I've been using a lot of the newer hop vareties such as Glacier, Newport, Santium and Sterling. I used Glacier(styrian sub.) and Sterling(saaz sub.)in the Henni clone. We'll see what happens.

My favorite styles are English Ales to make (Stouts, Porters, Bitters). But, I think I'm going to do a Dopple in a few weeks for the Fall. My friend from out of town made an excellent Saison and Belgian PA. It was just as good as anything I've had from the shelf in the store.

Last summer I made a few cream ales and some wheats. I think this summer it's going to be a hefe summer. My friend mentioned above is sending me some slurry from his Roggen. I'll have enough yeast to make Hefe all summer.

I'm sure your an all grain brewer, correct?

Not a fan of lambics though and see that you're thinking about Krieks. Aren't these very similar in characteristics of a lambic? Maybe a good one might change my outlook though. OK- I've messed on your profile enough for today but glad to see that someone here shares a common passion for brewing. Have a good one.

OK- I'm back. LOL- I've done some reading on culturing yeast and I have read that a lot of companines do just what you said. They condition with another strain to keep the original from being replicated.

Do you have any experience with any German styles other than Wheat? Any smoked beers?

I actually just cut the top off of a keg I've had for a year. I'm going to do a 10 gal all grain. I need to get a bigger tun. I have a 48qt cooler that will be perfect but I need to adjust all the fittings. I tried it 2 weeks ago and had some minor leaks. I'm currently doing 5 gal all grain with some occasional partials. I'm with you on all grain being cheaper and being able to control the fermentables more. I have a wheat that I'm doing Friday night and when I added 1# of honey it shot the term. gravity up 3 points. Not that its a bad thing but I'd like to keep it in range of the style. So I take it that you're a regular down at Brewmaster? I've had some good samples there. I took in a few bottles on a Saturday and low and behold- 2 other guys come in with samples. It was a good Saturday.

Love the picture of the raptor. How cool. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before!

nice bird pics

i love the beach and mountain photo's! u are very talented

He was a crook before he was ever elected governor of Georgia and he is a crook now

do tell....

thank you. I can certainly understand why you and your family would feel this way. ah dont you love it..when they are telling us how they are gonna lift us up..while holding their boot on our throats

Sorry Charles! I really think my situation was probably not the norm because it did seem to be quite a bit of hassle(more than I ever experienced in the past) for one trip. 6:30AM Saturday should be a breeze. Good luck!

Nice pic of the "fish hook" of Hatteras. Dad spent a lot of time out there. National Geographic even got a pic of him and his "Gotcha" vw dunebuggy one year. You couldn't really see it very good unless ya got a magnifying glass and squinted....but he insisted that was him, that little yellow spot over there in the wet sand line. :) Good pix you have there, but the HAtteras one is my fav. Reminds me of the Greatest Dad in History..Mine. :)

Hi Charles: Your question to mayor Meeker was selected. His answers will be posted on May 13. Congrats! -Angela

http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/2841417/ I owe you a prize. Shoot me an e-mail when you get back from your trip. Cool image gallery, btw. -Angela (aconnor@cbcnewmedia.com)

OK so with NBPTC it takes 10 years and yes I am working toward these goals to increase my salary however as I stated earlier I have to work 2 part time jobs just to make ends meet in the mean time. I am not saying that my education debt is unlike any other, however most people who have a 4 year degree start off at a higher salary, thus making those loans a tiny bit easier to swallow. These advanced certifications and degrees also COST MONEY and time (which is hard to find when you work extra part time jobs). And as far as taxes are concerned all that I am stating is that if taxes do increase I will also be paying the higher taxes All that I would like to suggest is that we focus on a mediocre starting salary for teachers(you can't get NBPTC in the first 3 years of teaching, you aren't even eligible until your 3rd year teaching).

LB, you are a pretty smart person. Just saying. charlesboyer

Thank you for the faith in my words of wisdom.LOL Have a good rest of week. Hump day tomorrow........

Charles, I SO enjoyed your blog! And may I say that your ideas and manners are the epitome of "class."

BTW, I'm Susan.

That's a pretty cool way to thank the troops. Looking forward to doing the same if I get the opportunity.

Thanks CB I appreciate the words. A lot of times I feel slammed on here from folks. But I get a lot of love as well. I just dust off the haters and quote the supporters. So you will be in the marquee. Check ya later.

Thanks for you apology...We do agree on the fact that other state workers deserve a raise as well and those not in education are overlooked in a gross way. I agree 100%!!

LOL! Unfortunately, I can't even be angry anymore. My hubby just called and he's been laid off. I'm not too worried though, he's very resourceful. But now I have to go home and be nice-nice...

thank you..i knew what i posted...i may be a slacker and all but i am very careful when i direct someone to a serious site.

Ah I have always followed Rule 1 - don't trust the government. I do know one thing, even though I have set myself up so that I can live without the Social Security, I certainly intend to get back every dollar I can. They have taken a ton from me.

Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your posts today, they were very informative!

I know, its a bummer mainly because we had some mini-vacations all planned out. When he starts a new job he'll be the new man and might not be able to get any time off. Financially, we'll be okay - even if I have to go out and get a part-time gig!

Yes, Charles. That is my real pic. I'm only keeping it up for a short while because crazy people are, well, crazy people. I mean, I have some haters on here.....
