On the "Butterball" post about the obese toddlers, you mentioned your off-the-charts son's growth. I'm raising one of those, too. She's 14 & already 5'11." To make sure your son is okay, you can check with your pediatrician, who should have been charting his growth. He'll be fine if he's following the same general pattern.
My parents' pediatrician joked that there were 4 growth patterns for kids: small, medium, large and Smith (ie, my maiden name)

If I'm reading their boys' weight-for-stature chart right, your son is right about the 50th percentile for his height, although it only goes to 48".
