"Before the trees sprout their leaves" >

On your request for old names. My grandmother was from Tennessee and not North Carolina, her name was Flavia Belle. My other grandmother's name was Bessie. You guessed it, I almost was Bessie Belle. Wouldn't that have been one to live with.

Bill I don't know you personally, but I have followed your career for years now. My husband and I enjoy you're music, your blogs, but mostly we appreciate your love of North Carolina and her people...Thank you for what you mean to the fols in this area...Benson, NC

I have a funny story about "Popping the Question". I had been dateing my then boyfriend for about two years. One night over at his parents house, we were sitting on the sofa watching TV with his father. His father turns to both of us and asks when we were going to get married. My boyfriend and I just looked at each other, stunned. Was my boyfriend's father asking me to marry his son?! Yes, he was, it turned out. That was on a Wednesday night. By Saturday, we had friends and family come to my soon to be husband's house and the preacher of our church married us. That was slightly over 5 years ago.

I have a great proposal story. My fiance-to-be took me to every place we had been on our first date the day he proposed to me. We went on a hike in the mountains, grabbed ice cream at a local shop, and ate pizza at the same place I first met him. I just knew a proposal was coming. But after dinner, he got a phone call from his mom saying that he needed to return home. We had plans to watch a movie with some friends, so I was greatly disappointed that the evening was coming to an end without a proposal. I went on to the movies with my friends while my boyfriend supposedly went home. As the movie began, I was making my way through a bag of popcorn, when I touched something hard in the middle of the bag. It was a box, containing the most beautiful engagement ring. My husband ran down the isle of the movie theater and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes, and we've been happily married now for five years!

Just want you to know, you are a part of my household (sometimes the nicest one here) every morning while we're rushing to get to work & school. You do a fantastic job and you seem like such a nice person. We especially love your stories on Carolina places and we own the Away from the Edge video of the Hatteras Light move. Thank you for seeing and sharing the beauty of this wonderful state we live in.

Hope your Easter is blessed.

Good morning! Nice to meet you!

This is the first time I ever read Bill's Blog. I was glad to read that his favorite vacation destination is the mountains. It is mine too. Of course my favorite season there is the Fall. I often talk to transplants who say they've never been and I tell them you have got to go! I may be alone, but I love it when it's misty and the clouds shroud the mountains. I love the smell of Mountain Laurel and little mom & pop roadside apple stands. I love it on a clear day on top of Grandfather Mt. when you can actually see the skyline of Charlotte. And talk about diversity, it's hard to believe that these breathtaking mountains are in the same state as the awesome North Carolina Outer Banks. We don't know how good we've got it.

I guess I got a little carried away with my posts, but it just struck a chord with me early this morning over my coffee. I rather expected for you to get a lot more action if I'd just shut up. Anyway.... Have a nice day. If you should want to respond to this, my profile is locked against all the kooks out there, but Angela in GOLO can put you in touch.

Kraft's Miracle Whip is not a mayo, it is a dressing as stated on the bottle.

I think the Tarheel Q has the best Lexington style BBQ. It is located a few miles west of Lexington on US 64 just before the Yadkin River bridge. The BBQ is wood smoked and chopped with a delicious red dippin' sauce on the side. You can get a quart of chopped bbq, slaw, sauce, and 8 buns for $10.00! Great eating and to carry home! Try it and you'll like it! Phil Poovey

BBQ-I grew up in Shelby, eating what I thought was the best BBQ in the world at Alston Bridges BBQ. Then, I became aware of this rivalry between the Shelby and Lexington establishments. Having tried both, I don't see much, if any, difference. Ten years ago, my family and I moved to Raleigh, and there was this "new" type of BBQ, with peppers. I personally can't stand it. Everyone in these parts seems to love it, though. Along the way, I married a beautiful young lady whose family just happened to be in the BBQ business in Petersburg, Virginia. A little place on Route 1 South, just off I-85 called Ely's (formerly Kings). Now that's BBQ. They make their own sauce (family secret) and, Boy is it good!!! It's only a couple hours drive, but well worth the trip. If you want good BBQ, give 'em a try.

Bill,

Having grown up DownEast, all the barbeque restaurants would have fried chicken in addition to the great Que. We recently moved to the Triad and restaurants here have broasted or barbequed chicken. Since I don't think there will ever be a true consensus on whose BBQ is best, maybe we could do a poll on the best fried chicken in the Triad.

Thanks

Just wondering how you could have a serious poll on western style barbeque without even having The Blue Mist on your Ballot . I'm a big Parkers and Bill Ellis fan but my personal favorite is Holden's in Youngsville , but my favorite western style is The Blue Mist hands down . http://www.foodhistory.com/foodnotes/road/nc/asheboro/bluemist/01/

Bill Leslie, check the totals, Parkers outdone Hog Heaven......just an observation........thanks!

Bill, coolest drive use to be hands down the Blue Ridge Parkway, not anymore, to many people, the roads are in poor shape. Even though it may be politically incorrect to say way to many bicycles. Today my picks are parts of HWY64 from Hendersonville west. Hwy 221 from Boone to Galax Va.

Bill, I hope you viewed my posting in reference to your Diner article. Ed

I'd have to recommend the Rockin Comet in Clayton for best diner.

Your blog about "Little Buddy" was touching. I am sorry for your loss.

Bill - I am sorry for your loss of Sparky - Like you I believe there is a special place for our friends - their time with us may be measured in "dog" or "cat" years but their unconditional love and companionship lives in our hearts and memories for a lifetime -

Within months of losing my father I held my cat Tiger as the vet eased his suffering - I howled at the moon so deeply everyone had tears in their eyes as I took him from the vet's office to rest in the long leaf pine woods I and my brothers help my dad plant - I like to think Tiger is stalking my dad's slippers like a youngster - I'm sure Sparky is likewise young again and playing with his friends -

At least these are the type of wishes our four legged family members inspire in me! Take care - Mark

You have asked for memoriable elections that we have. 1992 stand out in my mind. My husband of course waited until the las minute to vote that year. We have always taken our children with us to vote and that was the case that year. Our 10 year old daughter decided to wait out the line with her father and I was to take her 6 year old brother home with me. (Of course I had voted earlier) As my son and i left his comment to his father was " Daddy don't forget to vote for Mr. Bush, I don't want hime to lose his job. Needless to say he got a lot of laughter from the line.

My nickname is Bingo Bob, and not for the gambling game. When I was a young, good hitter playing baseball, my team-mates would say, "How 'bout a little bengle Bob?" and when I got my routine hit, "Bingo Bob!" they'd yell.

Bingo Bob Rupe (p.s. we met at Jim White's St. Patrick's day party years ago, I play mandolin)

About favorite Christmas gifts.... well not a gift exactly...but each Christmas Eve, my 2 daughters(31 and 36 - they don't mind me telling their age... go to have a "Father/Daughter Pedicures". Don't laugh unless you have tried it. It is the great thing to do because they are still my little girls! The pedocurist even start months in advance suggesting what should be painted on my big toes. The girls make the final decision. I have had snowmen, stars, etc.. This year it was a Christmas tree and snow flake. Most guys run for cover when I display the artwork. Bottom line is, we have fun while grandma watches the 5 little princes at home.... Joe

Happy New Years Bill!!!!! I hope that 2009 brings you good health, good luck, and lots love!!!

enjoy the weeknd bill, stay out of trouble

We've followed you (while you were reporting) since moving to Chapel Hill in 1979. That summer 30 years ago, our oldest son (17) was in his upstairs bedroom when his little brother (3) noticed a black snake on the roof and pointed out to his older brother -- "Joe, Joe, 'nake, 'nake!" Joe took care of the problem. While fixing dinner that night, we had broccoli and used kitchen tongs to serve them. Once on the plates and tongs back on the counter, Joe remarked, "I forgot to tell you that I used those to pick up a snake from the roof and through it back into the woods." His mother obviously had a fit. Lessons learned: little brother likes hanging around big brother, big brother takes care of little brother; oldest son is honest; oldest son likes to shock parents!

Read your vacation blog and thought it was nicely don. A comment from the woman who critized you for taking a vacation during tough times should be ashamed of herself. Our President wants the world economy to grow healthy and all you were doing was giving it a shot in the arm. Glad you had a wonderful time and thank you for sharing it all with us.

Where are you getting these spinich tortillas with scrambled eggs?

Why do you need to loose weight! You look great! Even if the camera puts 10lbs on you still look healthy! Either way good luck on your journey!

Thanks but I could stand to lose a few! For the spinach tortillas and ham-egg combination check out CupAjoe at Mission Valley in Raleigh.

I have been following your 10 Pounds Down blogs with interest. Would you consider a follow-up for maintaining your weight once you lose it?

Rationale: I started at Lifetime Fitness in Cary the day it opened in 2007. I got nutritional guidance and worked out with a trainer 3 times a week + two cardio days at a minimum. By June 2008 I lost 65 pounds. Since then, I have worked with a trainer, stopped, lost tone/motivation, and started up again with classes and another trainer. I successfully struggled to overcome workout burnout and complacency, and to find nutritious but not boring food options. But it was a struggle.

I have found that there is an equal challenge to maintaining weight loss and making lifestyle changes permanent. I would be interested in your perspectives. I love the feeling of success & greater self confidence, and I don’t want to lose that!

Good luck with your weight loss goals, and with maintaining your new look.

Hey Bill, Nice job on the "Weighty" Challenge! Just wanted to ask a question-comment "Montreat" was just on XM Radio Station 72 -SPA and had your name --is that your song? If so---nice job !!!! Have a great Day!

Thanks for the Montreat mention. Yes, that's my song. It's on the Peaceful Journey album.

Mr. Leslie ....what a wonderful photographer you are. Your Ocrocoke pictures are so beautiful! I enjoy all of your work. You are really a true renaissance man.

Bill We wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed your program in South Hill 9/16/09. I am a big fan of Celtic music and Don is a big fan of yours. Don says "I think your Dad sounds like my kind of man." Your commentary brought him to tears. Wonderful time, hope you visit us again. Don and Jeanette Holmes La Crosse, VA.
