Sixteen Things It Took Me 50 Years To Learn

 1. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe day-light-savings time.

 2. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.

 3. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip.

 4. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers.

 5. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 111.

 6. There is a very fine line between “hobby” and “mental illness.”

 7. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.

 8. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be “meetings.”

 9. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy people who are not in them.

10. When God who created the entire universe with all of its glories, decides to deliver a message to humanity, He will NOT use, as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

11. You should not confuse your career with your life.

12. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person.

13. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.

14. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.

15. Your friends love you, anyway.

16. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and do it.

We have a traditional Christmas here. Family comes early and the presents are opened. Then we put the ham in the oven, with all the fixings that go with it. Cookies, pies, some brownies, and a veggie tray. The most important thing is the prayer before eating, each one says a small prayer and thank the one and only, God, for all that he has done for us this special day. Without Him, we would not have this day, Merry CHRISTmas to all....

The Fixin's of course !

Right now all I'm hopin' to do is live long enough to get to eatin' some a Mama’s best holiday cookin'. Possum casserole with soppers and pigeon broth, and hole mess a greens. Aunt Hennie's world famous taters and hogfat fritters smotthered in raisin gravy, Meemaw's turnip hulls filled with pinto beans and sidemeat, And on top of it all im gonna hack me off a big'ol hunk a cousin B'roys hoot owl pie. I'll be a fixin' Roast Beaver cooked with root vegetables and pond water, Squirell stew with acorns and applewood dumplins, Hog backbone, Fish muddle, Sweetpatatapie and Nanner puddin'.

Wishing everyone a Verry Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

A day or 2 before Christmas, we go to see my brother in WinstonSalem.

Christmas Eve, our sons open gifts from us. Santa comes that night.

Christmas Morning, sons open gifts from Santa.

And I cook, and cook and cook.

But, this year, I think my husband is going to cook a ham on the grill.

Growing up we had a West Virginia Christmas. Our family of 5, my sister, brother, mom and Dad, would head up around 6pm to Cyclone WV to exchange prezzies. Later we would have fireworks, my uncle had this "minnie cannon" that would blow M80's in a pop can clear across the creek. So cool for a kid to watch. Many times there was snow. Then after a lot of sweets. We'd head back home to where my mother had placed all of the prezzies under the tree while we had earlier waited in the car to get going. My uncle, aunt, cousin would all follow us and stay the night. I miss those times. My aunt has passed on. And now I'm in another state. But that doesn't keep me from remembering. God Bless Us All, and Merry Christmas

We always do my family Cgristmas Eve and the in-laws Christmas Day. We have the "feast" at both and before any gifts are exchanged, we read the bible about the birth of Christ and say a prayer thankful we are together for another year. The kids are given their gifts first, so we can all see the little faces as they open them, and then the adults. After the gifts we just sit and talk, or play with the little ones with their new toys. This year we have a new addition, My sister has a little boy 7 months old. I can't wait to see his face with all the lights and excitment.

Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

Yankee Swap is also known as White Elephant. Basically, each person brings a gift in a certain price range. They are placed in the center of the floor and each person draws a number (1-total number of people participating). #1 picks a gift and unwraps it. #2 has the choice of taking #1's gift or selecting one from the floor. If they take from #1, that person selects from the unopened gifts. #3 can take from #1 or 2, or select from the pile. This continues until the last person. Some rules say that after the last person has their turn, whoever drew #1 can then keep theirs or swap with someone.

Sometimes, someone brings the gag gift, but in our family, we always bring thoughtful gifts (so no one gets shafted). It's funny when the group is larger and the gifts are high demand! It can get pretty fun!

Forgot to mention, as the group grows and the higher numbers draw, the swapping can really get chaotic. Ex: if person 5 takes the gift from person 2, then person 2 can choose to take from someone (except 5) or try an unopened gift. It can get to the point where a gift is swapped a dozen or more times. It really is a hoot! People begin trying to hide their gift in hopes that others forget what they have. It makes for lots of laughs!!!

On Christmas morning, I always make fresh squeezed orange juice.

Please delete my previous post, it had a typo in it. Thanks

Our family has a Christmas tradition that is now in its 3rd generation. Every Christmas Eve, we get to open just one gift and it is always the same thing...new PJs to go to sleep in. It started out so the kids would look nice in the Christmas morning pictures some 35 years ago. Yesterday, my son showed me the adorable PJs he got for my grandbaby.

This is a nice idea you have. I hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Cool little GIF with the stars there. I am amazed at how creative some folks are with that kind of program. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

On Christmas Eve, we drive around and look at Christmas lights.

I like to make a party for my little family on christmas eve before we get together with the rest of the clan christmas day. i'm just not sure how it will turn out this year because everyone is scattered and at this minute it's doubtful we'll all be together.

another personal tradition is staying up after everyone else is in bed, lighting the tree and some candles, turning the lights off and listening to christmas carols. it's wonderful. peace.

merry christmas, everybody!

I always cook a country ham the "old timey way" as part of a big family Christmas eve dinner (we eat around 5 pm), after dinner we all open presents. Then, on Christmas Day, we visit our children's homes to see what Santa brought the grandchildren. Its great!

On Christmas Eve, we have started a new tradition for our family. We fondue, open one present and play family games such as Uno Attack and Dominoes. We also do this on New Years Eve to avoid the amateur drunks who feel they must drive. Last year we invited a friend, who was going through a separation from his wife, over for New Years Eve because we knew he was going to be alone. He is from Mexico and had no idea what fondue was. In his mind, he thought of it as some kind of ice cream treat so he stopped on his way over and bought five half gallons of ice cream and toppings. We instituted this tradition of fondue about four or five years ago. On Christmas Day we open presents and then have breakfast. Around noon, we go to my wife's mother and dad's home to open presents, watch football, and eat dinner. We usually spend the night there even though they only live 25 miles from us. That would be a typical Christmas for us.

Our family gets together just before Christmas to exchange gifts; my daugher (Mini Me) usually reads about the birth of Jesus from the Bible. On Christmas Eve night we go out and look at all of the beautiful Christmas lights. Of course NO ONE gets to sleep late on Christmas day, lol!

To you and your family also. Merry Christmas!

I'm sorry to say we don't really have any traditions we follow year to year. We get together with whatever family there is around and go from there. We have tried to start a tradition that their Daddy read "the night before Christmas" to them, but they are only 2, 2 and 4, so it's been kind of a rough start. Maybe I'll get some ideas from the others on this post. Thanks for starting it.

We always watch "Christmas Vacation" movie. We also get together with the family that is available, exchange gifts and eat a huge dinner. It's important to us all to remember we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and expressing our love for all.

Hubby and I have an open house on Christmas Eve - it's a revolving door of family, friends, and neighbours. I typically make finger foods and have desserts. We serve our homemade wine, beer, and mulled cider.

On Christmas morning, hubby and I have an intimate breakfast, open our gifts, and relax with our coffee/hot cocoa. We go to visit his parents and then my mum in the afternoon.

It works well for us.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!

My eldest child was given a reprint of an old version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' when he was a toddler (he's 17 now). Since that Christmas when he was given the book, I've read it to him (and to his younger brother... and sister, once they came along) every Christmas Eve. It's funny, because of the 3 kids, my 17yo is the one who is most likely to remind me to read it, if we get preoccupied with other things on Christmas Eve.

I like that. It's a good tradition. The book has been drawn in a little bit, and the binding isn't great. There's a rip in one of the pages... I've tried to find another one just like it, but no luck so far. Even if I did, I'd keep the old one, because it has so many good memories associated with it. :)

A Wonderful Winter Solstice And Yuletide To Everyone!

One of our traditions is to watch the scrooge movies. My favorite is the George C. Scott version but the others are also fun to watch. Of course, even thought my kids are grown, we still do the traditional opening presents on Christmas morning.

Happy Holidays to you and yours, everyone calls me E, Thank you for the post on my profile page. One of my traditions for the holiday is to cook, cook, cook, and make a few meals for some that don't have much, and open my home to those that don't have family! This year I have to work, but I still am making time to do as I always do. Take care, God Bless, be safe.. E

Oh, I thought of one. Every year, I give my girls their own Christmas ornament. When they move away from home they will have their own set to decorate their first tree.

We have lasagna dinner on Christmas Eve and homemade Christmas cookies. We usually open gifts from family on Christmas Eve and go to candlelight services.

Christmas Day is coffee and opening gifts for the kids, then dinner at mom's (she is not as mean as me!)

In our neighborhood, we do luminaries.

At work, potlucks and the White Elephant gift exchange or Secret Santa gift exchanges.

I also love to listen to Christmas music such as Charlie Brown, Manheim STeamroller, Nutcr&cker Suite and Johnny Mathis. We always have to watch A Christmas Carol (We love the one with Patrick Stewart of Star Trek TNG fame) and It's a Wonderful Life. Sharing what we have with others is also a part of Christmas, especially with those less fortunate.

My husband & I(married for 19 years) have always opened our gifts (except for stockings ) on Christmas Eve. We take turns opening one gift at a time. Before the gift is opened, the giver tells the "story" of the gift( without giving it away, of course):why the gift was chosen and any other trivial tidbits of interest. I really look forward to this, even more so now that we have children. This really gives us a chance to have a few minutes to focus on each other.

I look forward to reading others traditions. Merry Christmas to you & yours.

It's Christmas!!!! Let's celebrate JESUS! I hope you are having a wonderful day. I know I am, we may not have much but with what The Lord has blessed us with and entrusted to us those are the priceless things. Merry Christmas from the Wallaces'

We go to candlelight service on Christmas Eve, then to eat with family. My mom comes over Christmas morning to open presents, we have brunch, and then we go visit with her elderly friends that don't have family close by. Since my husband died we have kinda taken each holliday as it comes and done what we thought we could cope with. Each year gets a little better, but sometimes when I'm alone I still feel sorry for myself and my son and have a quiet pity party. By the time my mom gets here and my son wakes up, I have had time to wash my face and get my act together so they aren't worried about me and can have fun.

Hope you and yours had a very Merry Christmas...I am working today :(

Good afternoon!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!!!!

I thought I would check it out, thanks for the welcome.

Hello. Thank you for the welcome, and Happy New Year to you as well.

I know I'm late, but I thought I'd share. Every year on Christmas Eve I give my children (there are 5 of them) a new pair of pajamas. Thats all I give them from me. They sleep in these to wait for Santa :) Its just a little something that I think makes us have tradition as well as allowing them to understand that Christmas is about family and not how many gifts they can accumulate. The grandparents do just fine in that area!

Happy New Year to you! Sorry I missed the Christmas Tradition posting. Thank you for including me.

Sorry I missed your Christmas traditions. We do a lot of the usual type stuff that I'm sure got mentioned but one that we have just recently started (over the last few years) is getting Chinese take-out on Christmas day for dinner!

Have a great New Year!

Happy New Year, Just 1 Opinion! The blog says it all!! With Ernest regards,

Hope you have a Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS! HOPE IT'S A GREAT ONE!:)

Have a safe and Happy New Year!!!

I say Happy New Years just one opinion.

Happy New Year to you!

Wow, you think big and I like it. May 2008 be your absolute best as well and bring you the best health imaginable. I am going to make some changes for the better, the biggest being eliminating fast food. Period! -Angela

Have a great 2008...make it the best year yet!!!

thanks for your post, happy new year.

haha! You are right! I am it!

Good morning and happy new year to you! I know I am two days late, but as you already know, I have issues..8-). I hope this year turns out to be the best year ever for you and yours! Have a great day!

LOL..I never thought to start a New Year whenever I wanted. I didnt think I had that much power. LOL. But now you have me thinking...hmmmm. We will see how the first 6 months go and take it from there. LOL. Yeah, I know animals are unpredictable and that is one of the reasons why I stay away from them. Even friends animals b/c you never know when they might turn. I will need to start being more careful when I am out there. This experience has changed my outlook and opened my eyes to see what could happen when I am not paying any attention. Thanks for the advice. I hope from the couple of posts that I made that you now see that I am a little normal..LOL

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, the narrowminded views could not see past the 'racism' implications...the facts are that physiological differences in certain people groups make for interesting reactions to some narcotics or other drugs, including anesthesia. Nothing racial about that at all...particularly when specific people groups lack (in general) a certain enzyme which makes them way intolerant of certain drugs...just the way God made them. But you know how it is on golo...they just have to be mean!

This is true! BTW, your profile comments are nicely put.

I just got back from New Years in Florida...I am freezing!!!

Good morning and thanks for giving me hope..LOL..I am feeling darn good today despite my doctors disappointing news. I had a good work out at the gym so I am feeling extra special. How are you feeling today?
