Sadly, some misinterpret my comments of my hatred of war as being 'anti-military'. Far from it. I have many relatives who served in several branches, both in times of war and peace. I even lost an uncle in 'Nam. And one of my best friends is a former 'Nam POW (2,757 days).
People like me who never served can only imagine what life is like in times like those.
Thanks for sharing your story. May peace be with you always.

Sounds dumb, and very lame, but thank you.
I was working the flightline on SJAFB in the early 80's when an F-4E with a centerline tank and AIM-7s caught fire during cart starts. There were a lot of heroes that day too, believe it or not. I can still see in my mind the crew chief turn and run for the extinguisher when he determined the flames were not just from the cart, then stop, turn to the jet, signal the pilots to get out, then race for the fire bottle again. Turns out the starter shaft disintegrated when the cart went off and shredded some fuel lines. As the wad burned, the fuel stated dripping onto it. That we manged to keep the jet, the c/l, and the ordinance from exploding was a miracle.
But that miracle had it's genesis in the plan we executed that day, based on your experience. Just wanted you to know: Your experience touched - and saved - other lives around here.
Hand salute, sir.

I know of this without having to Google it. You were there when that happened?
I have a friend, a dear one, though our politics clash dramatically, who flew from there.
He spent 2,757 days a a 'guest' of the North Vietnamese government.
Peace be with you, Hal. It's guys like you that we tend to forget and 'lose' in all of the hooplah of celebrating our veterans.
Not everyone gets to be Audi Murphy.
It's the guys like you that we really should be honoring today...and every day.
