hate to burst the bubble cliche. but the conservatives have not had control of Congress. You have to blame that on Congress. Can't spend without them. Even some of these republicans that call them selves conservatives don't know how to say no to the checkbook. /this country did not get in this shape by one party all by themselves. That; is why this country is declining because we are so split in dem and rep parties. IMO God will have the last laugh over all of the parties.......

Sorry, but I have to correct ladyblue. The congress has been in the control of the Dems the last two years, before that the Republicans were in control for 12 years (or longer).

Nothing should be covered by a gov (taxpayer) funded plan....your second idea (personal accounts) is genious and a wonderful idea...but thats what SS was supposed to be and look at it now....so though its a good idea (for those dumb enough to not have savings for catastrophic events), in the end it wouldn't work out I'm afraid
