What has prevented you from getting a nursing degree? Or becoming a computer programmer? Or a teacher? Or an auto mechanic? Or any number of other jobs involving skill sets that you could have been learning as you watch your industry slowly slip over to China?
Further, and again you may have done this, but what has prevented you from putting away a portion of your prior earned income into investment vehicles so that you could live comfortably while in retraining presuming you waited until the hammer dropped before considering it?

As a computer tech, you obviously know how to set up and maintain computers. Correct? Well, that is one seriously marketable commodity. There is a fortune to be made in doing that. Why have you not started your own company?
I need a Red Hat machine set up and properly locked down. I also need two other linux machines tended to. I have no desire to learn the finer points of linux. I would gladly pay you to come in and do those things for me. But if you are not promoting yourself as someone who is willing to perform those tasks, if you are content to allow your economic viability to exist at the whims of a company that cares not one whit about you, then I will never call you.
Also, my clients are constantly having problems with their Windows machines; I do Macs and can only refer them to Microsoft tech support. There is a huge market there.

Actually, we don't use Microsoft products at all on our LAN. We do web hosting and software development by the way. We have one existing product that runs on Linux, but we are going to be writing an inproved Mac based version of it as soon as I can find the appropriate person to do the job.
What I was referring to with MS products are some of my clients who use our service and have problems troubleshooting config issues. I don't know Outlook and can not effectively troubleshoot their inability to connect to our system beyond telling them that there is no problem on our end.
And just last month, my attorney had some major problems with her wireless LAN and intercommunication between two Windows boxes. I had to do some major hunting to find someone to go to her house and fix it.
My needs for your services would be purely referral as an occasion arose, not employment -- unless you learned how to code for the Mac. :)

Three years ago, the grass on my lawn got just barely too high and too thick to cut with my push mower. I called around to a dozen places to get someone to come out and mow my lawn on a one shot. Not one single company would do so; they all required long term obligations. So I called a repair shop and asked them if they knew anyone who could do it. They gave me the name of one guy who had his own pro riding mower for his own property. He was not in the business, but was disgusted with what he was doing in life. He came over and mowed. As a result of that contact, we talked extensively about setting up his own business taking care of yards.
He is now swamped and going to be hiring additional crews in the spring. All because he will do one shots on lawns without contracts. All it took is for him to see an opportunity and have the guts to let God take over the details.
