about dsickles

I have worked as a writer, graphic artist and photographer in publishing, pharmaceutical and hi-tech advertising, performing arts, new and traditional media, and am now working in the non-profit world again.

In my "spare time" (and to keep my skills sharp), I'm some combination of freelance writer, photographer and graphic artist for Our State Magazine, WRAL.com, a handful of local newspapers, and private industry.

My favorite pasttimes are spending time with my family, hiking, golfing, gardening, art history, knitting and reading. I also have high hopes of becoming a successful novelist and seeing the world before I'm too old to enjoy it.

You are one of the most thoughtful, considerate people I know - thank you Dolly!

I mean it. That notecard meant so much to me and every time I see my violet I think of you. You are a wonderful, top-notch person and I thank you for your kindness!

Thanks for reminding everyone about how simple it is to make homemade hummingbird nectar! I hope everyone will put a feeder or two!

Dolly, I hope you don't mind...I blogged your blog over in the active blogs. I thought it was a neat little piece of hummers and their feeding. Be good , and don't melt out there !

I appreciate your note. LOL...girl, they're not looking at your "air conditioned interior", those bikers are looking at you. ;) You are so right on the heat. I went and rode after dark the paast couple of evenings and it was still heat rolling about like an oven door being opened. But out of town, with all ot's it pavements and heattraps that radiate the heat for hours after sun goes down, out inthe country side, the rural roads are like heaven. I rode a bit last night. It just felt so right. You ought to think about trying to ride yourself. Lot of women getting into biking. And you know how how you are in theat air conditioned car, just think of how radiant you'd bike on your own motorcycle. ;) Come on now admit it, the wild side of Dolly is ride to strap on some leather chaps, put on those fingerless leather gloves and roar off into the sunset. ;) OK..your secret is safe with me. Again, thanks for your hummer blog.

") ..on the T-shirt. I've seen them, but I think the men who wear them, peel them off before they go home. LOL On the deaths on bikes stories, well that's true. They do give y9u amoment of pause but people die every day in cars, in bath tubs, on the job...I just try and be safety minded when I ride, never drink and drive, (try) not to speed, just keeping an overall awareness of of what's going on around me. I find biking makes me a better, more alert driver in other vehicles. I'm constantly trying to read other drivers body language, trying to fathom their intent...it's saved my bacon many times. That and the Lord lookig out for another old fool. ;) Be good..I love your writings about the garden.

I enjoy your articles on gardening. I have been using my coffee grounds for a couple of years. I don't really know if they make any difference, but I like knowing I'm recycling them if nothing else!

I'd like to get to know you better... you seem very interesting

I need to talk to you about something. If you would, please send me an email to wral@pageplanet.com

No. I need to speak with you. Had I wanted to speak with Angela, I would have done so at the start. :)

You have got to be the most stubborn woman on the face of the planet. 233-6601

Yep...stubborn and CIA-ish...not from a geographical standpoint , but from a being a distant unfriendly kind -a-way. I had no idea there was a GOLO anniversary. Now I know what Dolly looks like. hey hey. Sorry I missed that event. Been busy, what are you doing these days?

Dolly it was great to meet you yesterday!

Your new hairstyle is just as beautiful as your smile!!!

Thanks for all that you have done to make Golo a success my friend!!!!

Love your honesty on the Mary Easley's payraise story. Seems the governor and his clan are a bunch of crooks huh? From Black and the lottery all the way to the core of NC's government. Least the past few years have seemed that way.

What was the name of the organization again? I was serious about volunteering, what you described doing, seems right up my alley. I spent 6 months of my life watching my best friend die of Aids. He died in my lap trying to get to the toilet to vomit. It is not something I'd wish on anyone and during that time I learned a lot about how to safely interact and assit. But having been homeless myself, that is also something I'm passionate about.

Sweet! Thanks runnymede12000.

I took that self portrait on the way to Mama's down in Fed'vul last fall. Thought it'd do for a change on the profile pic. Got to get out and do some new ones on the hawg sometime. Just have to be careful doing it...with my ego, I might start enjoying the posing! :) LOL I sure hate being able to attend the GOLO do and getting to meet you among the others. Sigh. You be good and have a great day!....and week too!

...not being able to attend...(sigh, I've got to do better proofreading)

Free Bulls Game available for Friday, July 25th at 7 PM if you are interested. Max two tickets per Goloer till they are gone. I have 11 left so far.....my profile awaits your reply..

How ya doin? Didn't we start writing on Golo a year ago?

Did you stop operating with GOLO? They named a storm after you, hey hey! :)

hello dolly! :) great interview. such a wise woman! :)

Hi Dolly! Great interview. I was surprised that Angela used my catchy phrase that I've had on my profile for months. Glad you liked it!

Hope you have a great week.

You sure are causing a lot of problems in my native state of Texas LOL. You need to stop all that ruckus you are causing down there. LOL.

How is everything going? Hope all has been well!!!

I agree, thankfully none of my friends from Texas were effected by the storms any. All they saw was showers and some wind. Nothing really bad. Hope all has been good for you!

Hey Dolly- I know, you did have the fun office...ummmm, I had an interesting one :-) I saw my friend Brooke that worked there even less time then I did and she reminded me of some of the total fruitcakes that were there when we both were. You missed a couple of real winners. Oh well, guess it is good for some laughs :-)

My business IS booming! I am thrilled to be working with some great clients and am branching into new areas. I am working with HGTV on a large project (that is about the only channel I watch IF I watch tv) and am also running some international campaigns for some healthcare clients and actually charting new ground. We are tracking and monitoring closely as I will be presenting at several of their industry trade-shows, etc. Life is GREAT! In my free time I am working on restoring the cottage, getting ready to do the prison ministry with Smorgas and am gearing up for the coming school year. I intend to volunteer in daughter's classroom once a week.

I hope life is GREAT?

Your interview with Angela was wonderful. Would love to sit and chat with you, and there are VERY few people that impress me enough these days to even think that!

Terri in Willard

May your grass always be green, no matter which side of the fence you are on.

Regarding your Nissan, it sounds like you got some good referrals and I hope one works out for you. I will tell you this much that I know...Atlantic Avenue (Brent, Svc Manager) is not necessarily the least expensive, but I can tell you without an ounce of reservation that he will not lie or exagerate the problem. He knows cars and Nissans are his specialty. That's where we take ours for anything major. I trust him completely to be upfront with us. I don't refer people lightly b/c I feel that when making a reference, I'm putting MY reputation out there as well. I really trust him. If any of the others don't work out for you, check Atlantic Avenue out. Brent's a great guy!

Ciao Dolly, Hope you're doing fine and your ankle is better now. Are you all ready fro Halloween? Who are you voting for, I'm curious.

Thank you for your kind words!

You and I have a lot in common, professionally and otherwise. (I love Psych, Monk, and Jimmy Neutron.) I have even appeared in your magazine a few times, but I will not tell you where or when.

What I find interesting is that you seem to enjoy movies and music filled with chaos, yet your favorite cities -- Emerald Isle, Wilmington, Charleston -- are anything but chaotic. Is that how you balance things out? That's how I do it. I like to switch back and forth between WCPE and my Black Sabbath CD. I have enjoyed the Carmen Ballet and Black Label Society with equal fervor. (Note: Zacke Wilde was spitting beer at the audience when he played at Ziggy's in Winston Salem. Whew! I was glad we stayed out of the mosh pit. That's just nasty.)

Hey, I bet you'd also enjoy "Cities_of_the_Underworld" on the History Channel. It's truly fascinating. http://www.history.com/cities-of-the-underworld

One other thing....

Many of the prolific commenters on GOLO hate me, but then, many of the prolific commenters are also ignorant bigots. My favorite is the guy who speaks warmly about his childhood experiences with the KKK. If you believe what he has to say, the Klan is just a Southern version of Knights of Columbus.

Yep, a lot of people hate me on here. Thanks for not hating me.

Dolly! I saw you last night at bingo!! I was the chick who went toe to toe with Mary over her man [jokingly of course. I love Mary and JP]! That was you, right? I can't imagine another person with so similar a name.

Hi Dolly, Long time no see or hear. I saw your comment on Mary Easley. How are you doing?

We have comp tickets, so I'm sure we'll be alright. I don't know if I'll be able to make it though since I more than likely will not be able to get out of work until 7 on Friday :( I hope everyone takes lots of pictures though!

Great hiking blog.
