1977 - Tolkien's greatest (if perhaps the most difficult) work...
SAURON - "the Abhorred" - in the Sindarin elvin tongue Gorthaur the Cruel - in his beginning he was of the maiar of the vala Aule (significant in that Saruman/Curunir was, also) - a spirit that the Great Enemy of the world, Melkor the Morgoth, seduced to himself in the days when Melkor still was in his splendor, the mightiest of all the angelic beings, who drew many of the Maiar to him. Sauron was his greatest captain, and virtual 'second in command' of the evil domains he established in Middle-Earth, and was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another, and not himself. 'Aiyee,' shouted Legolam, 'A ballhog!'"
