Since the controversial new guidelines for mammograms have prompted so much discussion here on GOLO, I thought this would be a good time to re-post my blog from last year. And I personally agree with these comments, that waiting until 40 to start mammograms would be too late for some women.
The Encore Plus® program sponsored by the YWCA of Raleigh offers free mammograms to women in Wake and Johnston counties. To qualify, women must:
· Be over 40 years of age
· Without health insurance or with annual deductible of more than $200
· With an annual household income of less than $30,000
· At high risk for breast cancer mortality
These state-of-the-art digital mammograms (average cost is over $250) are performed on the Rex Hospital campus and a copy of the results is then sent to your personal physician. These exams are scheduled twice a month. The Encore Plus® Program is jointly funded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Avon Foundation, Triangle United Way and the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.
This is the third year I have participated in this program, and it is a real godsend since I don’t have health insurance. The appointment takes roughly the same time as a regular doctor’s appointment. Each woman is provided a box lunch, a T-shirt and pamphlets showing how to perform monthly breast self exams.
