the fall of the wall - 20 years ago today
Published Nov. 9, 2009Views: 170
The Berlin Wall stood for most of my adult life, a symbol of the lack of freedom behind and of the IRON CURTAIN. The Soviet states were as prisoners, much like Cuban are today.Seeing it fall, at the hand of citizens was symbolic of the fall of the USSR, the most repressive murderous regime, second only to Communist China.
The Hungarian Revolution - About 7 years before that wall went up, in the early 60's, there was a courageous uprising in Hungary and the communist government overthrown. Within a week Soviet Russian tanks were crushing Budapest. That was covered by the TV nightly news. Molotov Cocktails (kerosene bottles with rag fuses) were burning on the tanks and became the symbol of that uprising. Statues of Stalin were toppled. The USA cheered. Ike did nothing. The revolution was crushed. That was 54 years ago today, or tomorrow, that it was completely ended.

I was 4 years old at that time in 1956 in Budapest. I still remember shooting and Russian tanks. Hungarian Revolution waited and waited US support what has never happened, unfortunately.

I guess he chose another campaign stop.
But, then again, he hasn't bothered going to Ft. Hood either...

Oh, I remember ! You needed to get a SPECIAL passport to travel from behind the IRON CURTAIN. It was VERY-VERY-VERY difficult to get those special passport.
People born here in US, they have no concept how much freedom we have here. Freedom is here just like we have clean, drinking water in our houses.
Obama government works overtime to curtail our freedom (i.e. health care).

I lived first 29 years of my life behind the IRON CURTAIN. I knew that Berlin wall will come down but I was really not sure that will happen in my lifetime. Once it happened, I was very happy about it, and still I could NOT believe that it happened so fast.

I join you in that; and I think it is miserable that our President was not there; I really do wonder why.

But, then again, he hasn't bothered going to Ft. Hood either...although we hear he'll bless them with is presence during the Memorial (just what those poor people need during this time of hurt...crushing security and a "Look at me, Look at me President" to make their solemn moment all about him)

Although I was not fearful of the surroundings nor the people, I was still very happy to return to West Berlin and later to West Germany! The differences were stark.
