my turn to rant

Let me preface this by saying; I am sure this blog will cause some people to say some bad things about me, or call me names...to those people...I really don't care. If you have a problem with it, got stand in line with other people I may have offended by stating my opinion when it was/wasn't asked for.

So I have been thinking about the whole Fort Hood shooting thing. I came to the realization quickly that I truly don't care what his motives are. I don't care why he did what he did. The fact is that he killed 13 people in cold blood. I posted on my Facebook what I thought was a good punishment for this "man" ( I am not going to call him a soldier, because that would be disrespecting "real" soldiers)). My suggestion was to string him up (not hang him) and let the victims and the relatives of the dead take turns beating him with a 12" bamboo baton. I specified the bamboo and the length for a reason. First for the bamboo; it hurts like crazy getting hit on your bare skin with bamboo, it does not break easily, and it will take longer than something more solid to cause fractures and internal bleeding leading to death. Second the length; 12" allows the shooter to look into the eyes of the people getting their turns with him and see the damage that he has caused. Something amazing always happens when you look into the eyes of someone filled with grief. Even someone not guily of something like he has done dies a little inside when they look into eyes like that.

Case in point; while I was working as an Anesthesia Technician at Naval Medical Center San Diego we had a case with a Peds in the OR that ended up crashing hard and losing a ton of blood. The how and why are pretty irrelevant. After everything was said and done, we had to wheel this child from the OR to the NICU (Neo-Natal Intensive Care). While we were, I ran into his parents. While it was not neccisary, I felt like I had to say something to them. I started saying something, and when I looked up into their eyes and saw the grief, I felt my stomach hit the floor, my mouth dried up, and I could find no more words. I still get knots in my stomach 15 years later when I think about it. Now I had nothing to do with what happened to the child, so I can't even imagine what it would feel like to be responsible for someone's death and then having to see that look.

In my opinion it is time to stop being Humane to the Inhumane. Call me what you will for thinking that, or for actually saying it. What do we accomplish by coddling and pandering to these people? Do we make the victims or their families feel any better? What about their "rights"? Since when are the rights of animals like this more important than those who had their rights taken away in the blink of an eye, or while dying in agony from a gun shot? Where was their "due process"?

Long winded...but I will now get off of my soapbox...

Eye for an eye... very simple, and after a bit, would probably be effective. But with folks like they are today, we'd be short a good number before the message got across!

AMVAUGHA>>>can you ever say anything w/o bringing up a white hood! Bell Curve shows on you !!!! NOW how's that!

There most certainly is "evil." Evil exists and is our entire problem here on earth.

And this guy isn't insane - he cooly went thru a morning routine before starting his massacre.

He's just plain evil. Try, convict, firing squad.

"It just really sucks when you are in the number..."

IMO, the number should never be on the side of the criminal, but on the side of the victims...EVER. That is not justice, or manageable numbers.

Thanks for the conversation Lima. I always count it as a good day when a well thought out discussion can be had on GOLO.

Have a good weekend!

"However, you can't be cold and logical all the time. We are Human, not Vulcan"

As an individual, I will completely agree with you. As a gonvernment, I cannot. IMO, government should be cold and logical at all times.

It is cold hearted, but in governance, people must be thought of as a collective and not as individuals. It's a numbers game. If a small percentage must suffer in order for the rest to prosper, then so be it. It is when those percentages get out of control that new methods need to be sought.

Thus we have special interest groups to look out for those who are suffering. They strive to have none of their particular group suffer but a well governed society should realize the ultimate goal may not be achievable and shold instead strive to keep the numbers manageable.

It just really sucks when you are in the number...

"Then that begs the obvious question - Where is the line drawn?"

I can honestly tell you that I do not have that answer. Even I will admit that there does have to be a line. However, you can't be cold and logical all the time. We are Human, not Vulcan; and I for one have had my emotions pull my butt out of the fire more than once.

"but IMO there are times when the low road has to be travelled."

Then that begs the obvious question - Where is the line drawn?

"Even though you have openly admitted that you are very angry right now, you are in enough control of your emotions that you and I are able to have a civil discussion even though we have different opinions. If one of us were out of control, then this would have spiralled out of control long ago."

As some conversations here in GOLO land tend to do...

I really am not looking for or thinking that there is a magical fix to stop it all. I wish there was, but I am more realistic than that. I also would not advocate what I was talking about in the beginning as any kind of standard. My big beef when it all comes down to it is that we can hold the high ground, but IMO there are times when the low road has to be travelled. Sometimes shock and awe does work as long as one does not become desensetized (sp) to it.

As a matter of fact, let me use this discussion as a great example.

Even though you have openly admitted that you are very angry right now, you are in enough control of your emotions that you and I are able to have a civil discussion even though we have different opinions. If one of us were out of control, then this would have spiralled out of control long ago.
