thanksgiving memories

Heelygirls blog put this in my head... and part of my post is copied from my response to her (so forgive me if part of this sounds familiar)
Thanksgiving memories- good or bad, we all have them (though the bad are usually the most fun to remember). Last year we had turkey day at my grandparents. nothing unusual there... now, my family knows I am a picky eater- when i eat meat (pretty much any kind) its not much- I don't care for meat and most of the time will simply pass by it. I prefer the veggies and fruits, and salads and bread and carbs! LOL. It would be easy for me to not eat meat at all, and i wouldnt miss it a bit (except for the occasional cheeseburger, haha) anyways...Here's a run down of last year...
after sitting around for the better part of 6+ hours, staring at each other and nearly falling asleep, it was finally time for dinner...
papa salted the turkey.
about 15 times. no joke- it tasted like a salt lick. In fact, the deer might have appreciated it. It certainly was not edible for human consumption.
the veggies were mush. not soft. MUSH.
there was some sort of salad that consisted mostly of different onions. meh- not my thing. might have been good- but I'll never know...
my mom made a butternut squash soup that looked and tasted like butternut squash baby food. one look and a taste of it on my finger, and i knew I wasn't going to eat it- but my poor hubby was forced to have 2 bowls of it- cause hes too nice to say he doesnt like something, and my mom is...well...my mom. he finished bowl one, grateful the experience was over, and she gave him more. Poor guy. I tried to pass it off to the dog when she left the room for a moment, but even he turned his nose up at it.
my grandparents and mom drank more wine than I thought humanly possible. 5 bottles of wine in a one hour period. and they were still going when we left.
everyone was talking about something totally unrelated. mom was going on about some river when she was a kid, papa was talking about auto workers unions and to this day i still have no clue what grandma was on about. All of these conversations were going on at the SAME time.
mom fell off the back porch after we had left and grandparents went to bed. she broke her glasses. I'm sure the glass of wine remained intact.
No one thought of mashed potatoes and gravy or stuffing or rolls until we were seated. and by then, its too late.
So what did i have to eat? I heated up a can of tomato soup when i was supposed to be cleaning the kitchen. hubby and i went home hungry, and exasperated.
this year we will be monitoring the cooking, as I think we are the only ones who are not senile, and I KNOW we are the only ones who are sober. Not too mention, that we are both better cooks than anyone else. ok, papa does still win the prize for best deserts- I'm good, but hes better. My mom shouldnt be allowed in a kitchen.
here's hoping this year is better. at least edible. I don't ask for much. really, i don't. Some side dishes I will eat and I'm a happy girl. honest.

My in-laws are both dead now. I'd welcome a glass of her "fried ice tea" if I could see them again.

Once they've all passed, you'll be sad they aren't around to spice up your holidays.
Odd, but that's the way life is.
God bless.

this may explain the pitiful food situation. OMG--Maybe you should fix you and hubby something to take with you next visit and keep Mo out the kitchen by all means. LOL. .....I have no parents or grandparents home to go to Thanksgiving as they have all passed. In spite of the horrible day you have these memories you can tell.
