"Kennel cough" or infectious tracheobronchitis is caused by several virus and bacteria. Most commonly parainfluenza virus and Bordatella (bacteria). While annoying to the canine, the disease is self limiting, and rarely fatal. Canine influenza is reporting in with about a 10% mortality rate (depending on region).

Pretty much; kind of how they want you to have your dog get a vaccination for kennel cough...well if my dog is never in a kennel or around other dogs how's he going to get that?

To date no reported cases (that I'm aware of) of h3n8 have been documented in cats (or humans for that matter).

Not being critical at all. Each Vet will have the best advice for your pet. The golden that lives with us went to the Vet yesterday (I escorted her as she does not drive well, and has trouble with credit cards). The vet explained the risks and so forth and she chose to get the vaccination.
