Life is NOT politically correct. Hold on to your hats folks, another revelation some won't admit... LIFE IS NOT FAIR,, never was, never will be and probably not suppose to be and to teach your children otherwise is IMO bad parenting.
I get so sick of everyone having to tip toe not to hurt someones feelings. What prompted this was YMMV's blog about the term "you people" She was asking if it is racist.... NO.
By the way YMMV this is not a lash at you, I am actually agreeing with you
"You people" refers to a group that is being talked about, whether it is men, women, poor, rich. PERIOD - Nothing RACIST No diff than using the term "THEM"
But everyone wants to jump on the "poor old me" bandwagon. Geez... Let me say something else, someone posted on her blog that it may not be racists but it was stereotypical... well SO what? Guess what stereotypes are? Before you answer, do something for me, take the goggles off, take off the kid gloves and be willing to admit the truth...
Stereotypes are based on things that TEND to be factual. So what is the problem?
There is a stereotype that economically challenged (god just saying that makes me want to puke, come on let's call it what it is POOR) neighborhoods have lower performing schools... WELL it is TRUE
There is a stereotype that most illegal immigrants drive with NO license, well it is true, because they either can't get one due to id or if they DO get get it isn't legal because they used a fake ID
If you really think about the vast majority of stereotypes, they are based on truths. And you know what, the truth hurts, and if you don't like it then do something to CHANGE it - to MAKE IT NO LONGER TRUE...
I tell you if the speech and thought police get ANY WORSE in the USA then we have far bigger problems than socialism to worry about, we will be headed to communism...

...we all have different "perceptions" of the truth, but ...there really only is ONE truth..." g2u
2nd point 1st: If there IS only one truth (a whole philosophical debate in itself) how do you know that YOUR* perception matches it? Since you don't KNOW that it does, it is not "just being honest" to stereotype by where people live or by race or economic status. It's saying that "they" somehow deserve to have less than everyone else because "they" brought their circumstances on themselves. For SOME, that may be accurate. For others, it's not.
*Above = generic you.
You object to being lumped in with people with whom you share a choice, i.e., to believe that stereotypes are true. If it's wrong to do that to YOU, why is it OK to say that "those people" are being oversensitive when they object to being lumped together by something they *didn't* necessarily choose?

BUT if someone is being vicious or mean and using honesty to mask it that is NOT acceptable behavior (AGAIN)
And yes we all have different "perceptions" of the truth, but the fact is there really only is ONE truth...

One very important point is that YOUR perception of the truth does NOT necessarily reflect reality. Even where it does for some of the people you're addressing, it doesn't for all of them.
Too often, people use "being honest" as an excuse for being rude. It's not asking someone to "tip toe" to expect common courtesy.

I didn't mean people had the right to be rude and obnoxious. I do think they have a right to their opinions though without having to worry about tap dancing.
Now, having said that again, I do not think that viciousness disguised as the truth should be acceptable behavior

I too believe in the golden rule, but it does not mean I shouldh ave to tip toe. Being mean and intentionally hurtful is one thing, being honest is another. If the honesty hurts, well so be it... But i agree if you are trying to be mean and using honesty as the vehicle, then yeah, it sucks, but still what are we going to do? Call in the thought and speech police?
