facebook wants to rule the internet

At least that's what I think.
I like Facebook. I enjoy connecting there with my family and old friends and colleagues. But I am increasingly concerned with what Facebook is doing for business because I know that MANY people don't realize it. I get that it's a business and the people who run it are extremely smart. They probably will end up ruling the internet. But I just want to throw some things out there for you this morning to get some of it out of my own head.
For the record, I think that businesses absolutely need to have a Facebook presence and engage there. That's where everyone is. But consider some of the following and think about your own personal use and how you share content:
How much of your information does Facebook possess? A lot.
Have you ever added an application and answered yes to the question about allowing that application to access your information and your friends information? At that point you are sharing not only your own information but that of all of your friends.
Let's say you have 250 friends. What happens when all of those friends add applications and answer yes to that little sharing question? Another third party has your information.
When is the last time you checked your privacy settings? Do you know if you show up in Facebook's search? How about ads? Are your pictures being used elsewhere? Who are you allowing to view your pictures?
Do you know if you are being tagged in photos? What about video? Have you set your privacy settings to notify you if you are being tagged or made it so that no one but you can actually see your name if you are tagged?
Did you know that Facebook status updates will soon be searchable in the Bing search engine. Here's some info about that deal.
Maybe this is nothing for you to worry about but maybe it is.
Old Rebel recently posted a link to an interview on NPR about Google. It's about 40 minutes but worth the time. The discussion moves to privacy and some interesting insight is shared.
So just look at your privacy settings closely when sharing on any social network, and remember...once you post it, they own the content in most cases and can do with it what they will.
Have a terrific Tuesday!

However, my privacy settings are really high. as high as you can get them, in fact. This has less to do with me caring what is 'search-able' but more so that my clients (who often google my name) don't try to be my 'friend' or stick their nose where it really doesn't belong. afterall, they don't need to know most of the info i share with my family and friends ;)
My clients are always welcome to find me on twitter, linkedin or my blog.
just not facebook. LOL

It's one thing to have your name in the phone book and a business goes to some effort to call you. But to engage in a 2-way 'relationship' with a business is way too intrusive to me. I'll choose who I do business with and not 'invite' them into my social circles to harass and harang me whenever They want to. I don't want to become a business's 'friend', I know where to find if I want them. :)
