pondering the coverage of fayetteville murder-suicide

I was just wondering the relevance of mentioning the following, in the article of the tragedy ( Fayetteville family's death a murder-suicide ) ;
"Billy Maxwell Jr. applied for a concealed weapon permit in December 2007 and was granted one in January 2008, according to authorities. The permit was still active at the time of Monday's murder-suicide. "
What does this information add to the story? Would it be as "necessary" to add that he perhaps was an avid hunter and had a active hunting license? I don't know if he was or if he had a hunting license, but isn't that about as relevant to report as that he had an active CCP?
Now if he had yanked a concealed pistol out in a restaurant and gunned down his family, or even innocent bystanders and he happened to have a CCP, I would accept that it was part of the story. But the man was in his own home, so what point would having or not having a CCP matter to this story?
It almost sounds like the reporter has an ax to grind against the availability of CCP's and pushed that little tidbit into the story to validate their own position on the issue.
The main thing in my mind, regardless of any issues I have with that one point, is that this is an unbelievable tragedy. Other than my own nitpicking , there is no fault with the reporting.
My heart goes out to the friends and family members left behind, trying to find some reason where is none to be found.
