victims' families push for fetal homicide law

Past attempts to give legal rights to the unborn have been a long and bumpy road for many advocates. Unfortunately though, I don't think it will ever be a success as long as abortion is legal. The two methods of killing the unborn (desired through abortion or by murder of mother) would create conflicts within the laws by having double standards involving the life of a child.

I personally have mixed feelings about abortion. Sometimes I think it is what is best for certain situations. Other times - and many more times - I think the privilage is horribly abused, turning abortion into a convenience, costing the  child it's life...never to open it's eyes.  But someone who murders a pregnant woman, then they should be charged with double homicide.  You can bet that that is what those murdered pregnant women would have wanted.

I am not an advocate for abortion...however, there is a HUGE difference between having the "choice" to terminate your pregnancy..and for someone else to "murder" a person and making that choice for them. It isn't hard to come up with legal terminology to differenciate between the two.

"having the "choice" to terminate your pregnancy..and for someone else to "murder" a person"

In one case it's "terminating pregnancy" and in one case it's "murder"?

In both case the outcome is the same only the person responsible is different.

The problem with your reasoning grenlyn is that since abortion is legal and based on the belief that life begins at birth, one can't claim that a life was taken when it hasn't began. Thus no charge of double homicide. Furthermore, one could argue that the pregnant victim was planning to abort and therefore it isn't murder. There are too many complications with the law as it is and Americans seem too concerned they may offend if they just call all killing of pregnancies wrong (unless some want to place stipulations on when one can kill the pregnancy) and thus be able to charge double homicide in the murder of a pregnant woman.

Personally, I believe life begins at conception and therefore murdering a woman would be double homicide.

"At least 36 states nationwide recognize an unborn child as a second victim, according to the John W. Pope Civitas Institute, a conservative public policy advocate."

What is the track record in other states? How is the law working there, I wonder?

A "pregnancy" is not being terminated when an abortion occurs; a baby is being terminated. People use all sorts of other terminology because it helps them rationalize what they are doing. I agree, this does get in the way of assigning the "right to life" and therefore afford them protection, when you have so many people that want to maintain the choice to end the lives of their babies. People like to say "pro choice". I call it "pro death". I find it interesting that many of the same people that want to be able to kill babies; shudder at the thought of terminating cold-blooded killers. Something seems wrong about that to me.

Being in the condition of carrying an unborn child is a pregnancy whatelse is new. It doesn't change the fact that one is carrying an unborn child. I personally believe life begins at conception. The reason I chose to use the term pregnancy is because we are talking about the murder of a woman while she is pregnant.

And I agree, whatelseisnew, that pro choice is supportive of protecting one's right to choose whether or not another human being has the right to live. So many say that these mothers "can't" take on the responsibility of a child for some reason or another. We should focus on prevention of unwanted pregnancies and let people learn by bearing the consequences of their choices, i.e. raising a child. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of abortions are performed as a means of birth control, not the result of rape or medical issues.

People's faith is what divides them on this issue. I personally believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. He doesn't make mistakes. I believe children are a gift of the Lord and if He blesses you with a child, He will enable you. So many have no faith in God's ability, will, guidance, etc. I guess you could say one would have to lean on His understanding and not that of their own. Many don't get it.

"I call it "pro death". I find it interesting that many of the same people that want to be able to kill babies; shudder at the thought of terminating cold-blooded killers. Something seems wrong about that to me."

Having it both ways is central to liberalism. As soon as I saw this story yesterday, I thought about the double standard that would be involved.

Furthermore, one could argue that the pregnant victim was planning to abort and therefore it isn't murder.

Most victims I have seen murdered the past few years were in their third term of pregnancy. I doubt very much they were even considering an abortion at that point.

Like I said, I do not agree with abortion. It's all murder, yes, the perpetrator is different. But it's the choices that one make dictate their intentions. Murder is taking away ones choice for life. In both cases it would be true. I don't like abortions, I will stand firm on my beliefs. But to use abortion as an agrument to not charge a killer for the death of a fetus is wrong! It's still life in my eyes. And they took that life away.

I will continue to pray this legislation goes through. There are too many crazy people out there to just let it die. Sorry for the pun, but it's true.
