boeing picks sc over nc and washington state for new 787 plant
Published Oct. 29, 2009Views: 210
Boeing Co. will open a second assembly line for its long-delayed 787 jetliner in South Carolina, expanding beyond its longtime manufacturing base in Washington state to take advantage of economic incentives and a nonunion work force.
The Chicago-based airplane maker said Wednesday it chose the site in North Charleston over Everett, Wash., because it best suited plans to boost production of the highly anticipated jet, designed to carry up to 250 passengers.
The decision ended an interstate competition for the huge factory, with South Carolina prevailing over the state where Boeing has built airplanes for decades. It hands South Carolina production of a plane crucial to Boeing's future but one plagued by problems stemming partly from the company's reliance on suppliers spanning the globe.
South Carolina offered Boeing $170 million in incentives and relief from sales taxes on things like fuel used in test flights.

Note: this was the plant that NC officials had hoped would go to the Global Trans Park. How the Boeing decision will affect current GTP plants like Spirit remain to be seen. It may make sense for them to co-locate in the same area in order to reduce costs and take advantage of the talent pool that will develop in Charleston.

Whatever the case, it'll definitely help the low country out & it's always good to have new technology boosts to the Carolinas. It's always neat to have big aircraft around - wherever you live!

The story I read referenced groundbreaking, with production scheduled to begin some time in 2012. That sounds like new construction to me.

Boeing already has a large parts plant in North Charleston. That may be what you are thinking of.

The recent decision by the employees at the SC facility to discontinue representation by the union didn't hurt, I'm sure. I'm very glad this happened. It will be a much needed boost for the Low Country.
