how old for sleepovers?

Ok, my daughter turns 11 tommorrow, and has been having (and attending) sleepovers since kindergarden. Obviously when she was younger, only with people we knew fairly well, but as she gets slightly older, a phone call and meeting the parents when we drop her off is generally sufficient. She has been invited to peoples homes who I decided I did NOT want her to stay with (at least overnight).

Just as in years past, she is having a sleepover for her Birthday this year. Unfortunatly, only her best friend can attend, which makes for a very small party, but at least I know there will be no personality conflicts ;)

When I asked her why the others could not attend, there was a variety of reasons- out of town, had company coming, previous plans- pretty general. but one surprised me.

Her mother (I assume) would not let her attend sleepovers. This girl- who is in the 5th grade, and one would assume about the same age, has NEVER spent the night at a friends house.

Does that seem strange to you? I know by the time I was her age, I was well versed in sleepovers, as were all of my freinds, and there was one almost every weekend, we rotated homes! LOL

I get being protective of your kids, but this girls parents never contacted me- not a phone call or email (both were on the invitations), never asked to come over to meet us (which would have been more than ok).... nothing.

I dont know, this seems odd to me.

How old were your kids when you let them start spending the night with friends??? How old were you??

I wouldn't take it personally. I know a family whose son had bladder control problems at night until he was well into elementary school. He wouldn't have sleepovers b/c he still wore pullups to bed. Better to stay home, than have kids tease b/c kids can be very cruel (even if unintentionally) sometimes.

As for my own kids, they have been having sleep overs since they were infants. Between family and very close friends, they are very comfortable having sleep overs and we love to reciprocate. I would say that around kindergarten is when they started having sleepovers at friends whom we'd just met through the school or sports leagues.

@ kitkat hmmm i didn't realize mexico had a cultural thing with it. we used to have a neighbor who was from mexico and I wouldnt let my daughter sleep over there, because the 3 older brothers also slept in the same room, but we had invited her to spend the night with us and she never could. I never thought anything of it, because we did know the parents, but thats interesting.

My daughter was pretty young when she started, too. She does have one friend who cannot sleep over. Now my daughter is 12 and they are both in the 7th grade. Her family says that it is a cultural thing. They are from Mexico and they don't let kids spend the night. Neither of their kids get to spend the night anywhere.

I agree that it is weird, especially at that age. They may very well have a valid reason, or they could just be freaks. Who knows. I used to have sleepovers all the time, and it amazes me today that kids would come to my house because my mom (and eventually stepdad) smoked like chimneys. Those girls were good people to not tease me about it or anything. 'Course, that was the 80's, so their parents probably smoked, too.

3 months. Used to sneak em into the neighbors crawl space. Neighbor kept thinking cats were getting in.

without reading all the previous comments, I just think some parents are way too overprotective and don't let their kids do anything

I wet the bed until I was like 16, she may have similar health issues.

Maybe the girl is nervous about being away from home overnight. Maybe the parents feel uncomfortable because they don't know you well. Some families allow children to spend the night with members of their extended family but not with other people, so the children are getting experience being away from their parents -- just with grandparents, aunts & uncles, etc. My children only spend nights with family members and people we know very, very well. My parents had the same rule, and I think it was a good one for us. I wouldn't take it personally.

Shoot I still have sleep overs..they are great. As for my daughter she never out grew them. Now that she is in college...she has them all the time. I never had a parent say no..well..achem..I had to take one of my son's friends home at 1am once..he never returned. I drew the line when he peed off the top bunk at the other children. LOL

No doubt about that, girlfriend!!! Bless her heart!
