weather channel to start showing...movies
Published Oct. 21, 2009Views: 341
The Weather Channel plans to show movies for the first time in its 27-year history, according to AP.
"The Perfect Storm," will be the first one.
The George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg movie about a horrific storm off the New England coast will air on Oct. 30, the 18th anniversary of the actual storm. Network executives had been thinking about adding movies, and the timing proved too good to pass up, said Geoffrey Darby, the network's chief programmer.
Weather Channel was bought by NBC some time back and now apparently looks to move its ratings upward. Long ago, the instantaneous nature of the Internet made waiting for "Weather on the 8's" and other tease-and-wait programming obsolete for many if not most of its audience.
Funny thing is, even WRAL does that: "Big changes coming in the weather" is often intoned as a news teaser during regular programming, which of course is meant to make you want to watch the news at 11pm. Problem is, if you happen to have a computer handy, you can simply go to any website - this one, accuweather.com, wunderground.com, etc. and find out what the forecast is...and you can skip the news. Given the sensationalistic nature of television news these days, I almost always do.

"A deadly chemical gas leak at a local business endangers hundreds. Join us at 11 for the full story"
Hmm.. now, what if I happen to be one of the 'hundreds' endangered? And why do I have to wait two or three hours for details?
Sometimes, I don't think they really think these 'teasers' through.

Sounds like a truly bad idea when other choices on cable offer commercial free movies.

Well, if you have basic cable or satellite that's what you get on any other channel unless you tier up to paying for HBO or something of that ilk. Personally, I would rather watch movies without commercials so that is why I have FMC, TCM and IFC (no, I will not get gouged with HBO, Showtime, etc). However, I do sometimes watch movies on TBS or USA or what have you and enough people watch them to keep those channels going I suppose.
