in praise of the humble...neti-pot!

The first time I heard anything about a neti-pot was a year or so ago. The big buzz in the US really got cranked up after Dr Mehmet Oz demonstrated the use of these things on television, recommending them for relief of allergy symptoms and nasal congestion.
I thought the concept was nuts! :) After all, didn't I expend effort every time I went swimming to keep water OUT of my nose? Now these folks are talking about pouring it IN?? Totally insane, I thought.
I'm not sure when the tipping point was when I became convinced to try one. A recent cold and sore throat (caused by sinus drainage) might have had something to do with it. I quickly discovered that YouTube is full of videos of people demonstrating them...which is a tad weird. I even saw one (obviously comedic) where a guy used it 3 times; the first time was with water...the second time he used coffee...the final time he used single malt scotch! The scotch caused an immediate reaction, complete with expletives. Hope he had fun.
At any rate, I tried it, using the recommended warm water and salt solution. It works amazingly well! If you have sinus congestion or fall allergy problems, I highly recommend using a neti-pot. All you're basically doing is irrigating your sinuses and nasal passages, but it beats the heck out of just blowing your nose and hoping for the best. It really helps.
Has anyone else tried one out? I once thought they were holistic horse-hockey, but now I have become an advocate.

Then she started getting chronic ear infections, and the doctor told her to stop.
God bless.

You're probably right, plus she probably didn't get all the water out of her sinuses afterwards. They recommend you lower and tilt your head down like you do when you touch your toes to allow it all to escape. The good thing about the neti method is it uses gravity only and is very gentle.
