The DOT is talking about widening I-40 in Wake and Johnston counties. I know a lot of you have talked with me about those congestion problems around the Clayton Bypass. Here's the release from DOT:
NCDOT HOLDING CITIZENS’ INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOP OCT. 13
FOR PROPOSED I-40 WIDENING PROJECT IN WAKE, JOHNSTON COUNTIES
RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a citizens’ informational workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for the proposed Interstate 40 widening project in Wake and Johnston counties.
The informal meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Comfort Inn, located at 126 Cleveland Crossing Drive (just off Exit 312) in Garner. Citizens are invited to drop in any time and speak individually with NCDOT officials and view project maps and plans. Comments received during the workshop will be considered as project plans are refined. No formal presentation will be held.
NCDOT proposes to widen Interstate 40 between Exit 301 at the Raleigh Beltline interchange to Exit 312 (N.C 42). The purpose of the proposed project is to help reduce congestion along I-40. Additional public involvement will be conducted throughout the development of this project.
Right-of-way acquisition for this project is scheduled to begin in 2014, and construction is currently unfunded.

When they have enough money to purchase right-of-way from the property owners who abut the road.
As it is now, there is no room to widen it.

By the time the road is open to travel it is already inadequate to handle the traffic.

Ever notice that Raleigh doesn't have any north-south running limited access road?
They yack about long-term planning all the time, but this is proof that there is in't any.
