a question for my fellow animal lovers

Okay, so here's the deal.  We have a 10 month old Lab who has been an "inside" dog since I got him last Christmas.  We have a large fenced in yard, so whenever one of us is home, he's outside running and playing.  At night, and during the day when we're not here, he stays in.  We also have a 6 year old cat who stays inside 100% of the time.  The cat has been around the dog since he was a puppy, therefore they are used to each other and get along, etc., etc.  We've been planning on getting another dog sometime soon, but we want it to be a puppy so it can be raised around the cat too, as opposed to bringing in a grown dog who might never adjust to the cat, and possibly even harm him.

Sooo....the point of my blog.  My partner has a family member who has another Lab who spends his entire life in a pin in the back yard with not much attention.  It's "cared for" as far as food, shelter and water, but other than that leads a pretty sad life in my opinion.  He's somewhere around 5 years old and has always been an outside dog.  I'm torn as to whether or not we should take him though.  At 5 years old and having always been an outside dog, I don't think it would be wise to bring him into the house (and around the cat) and turn him into an "inside" dog.  But I'd feel bad keeping one dog outside while the other one gets to stay in....that doesn't seem right to me and I know it'd bother me.  On the other hand, he'd be able to run and play and not have to be cooped up all the time.  Any thoughts or suggestions??  Many thanks!

Dogs and cats are, almost always, much happier outside. It's not natural to keep a dog or cat inside for extended periods of time. There's nothing for them to do inside.

I have a soft heart for animals and am torn a lot when considering rescuing another animal.

IMHO, the cat has first dibs on your loyalty. Maybe have the lab over for a weekend and see how he treats the cat. Some labs are very gentle with cats - some are NOT. If the lab seems aggressive toward the cat, then back to the pen he goes. If the lab ignores the cat, then maybe he would fit into the household. Leaving one dog in and one dog outside during the day is not that big a deal - I had one dog that loved the house and one dog that wanted to sleep outside even if it was snowing.

We have four dogs (also two cats, two degus and a bearded dragon inside as well as about a 1/2 dozen outside cats). Anyway, my mini schnauzer lives inside all the time, only goes out to potty, our chocolate lab goes outside in the morning and comes inside at night to sleep. Our two beagles both rescue dogs live outside. We tried to make them inside dogs but after about two months of trying to "housebreak" them, it was either crate them except when we took them outside. We chose to fence in the backyard and now they have dog houses and the lab plays with them during the day. I don't know if the older black lab will take to potty training at his age (it is kinda difficult with animals that have learned to potty in the same area they eat and sleep as what happened with the dogs from the shelter, they lose that natural aversion to it.) Anyway, they do absolutely wonderful outside! Good luck and I am glad you are thinking of the 5 year old dogs feelings!

I'm kinda like Lolly, maybe a trial period while everyone is home? Also, easiest fur baby I ever had to house break and train was an older rescue who had always lived outside. Now she runs the house and the other pups with it.

ignc73 - i think our dog is one that prefers being inside. More often than not, when we let him out, after about 15 minutes he's back at the door wanting to come in - even if we're outside with him. As far as the cat, he's never been outside, and has had his front claws removed, so outside isn't really an option for him at this point.

Well my dog natural or not is not going to be outside when I'm not home. In fear of some moron letting him out because he is aggressive, extremely aggressive to any stranger. and I don't want a lawsuit on my hands if some idiot wants to try to befriend him. Someone stole my cat they are not stealing my dog.

sidenote: no cats in the house, but did have a bird the rescue really, REALLY wanted to love. She gave up after a week of stalking. LOL Good luck!

you can teach an old dog new tricks, save the lonely dog.

Lolly, asb, and Gran - thanks for the input. I think a trial period may be the best idea, and if it doesn't work and the new dog needs to stay out, at least he will still have interaction with other dogs and people, and more importantly, room to run and play. Thanks!

My dog is so mean he won't even let another dog, cat or squirrel befriend him. He'll try to rip their head off. I got him from the shelter when he was a puppy , very small and fluffy and I never raised him to be mean but omg you make him mad you better RLH. I don't know why he's so territorial.
