Wral's On the Record investigates possible reasons behind people's conduct that is becoming more and more uncivil as a result of the things they say, especially on internet community social sites and at public gatherings. Golo is used as an example in the discussions. Tips on how to curtail abusive content are also mentioned.

People under stress during a recession lash out at whatever is convenient for them. Is it any wonder that forums like GoLo, which offer them an outlet in which to vent largely without suffering the repercussions that doing so directly, (i.e. to those around them) are attractive for these folks?

One of the main reasons you rarely see Sheba here: the uncivil behavior of some. When there is reasoned, calm discussions, it's a joy to participate. When it deteriorates into name calling, rantings, downright meanness, it makes one glad that there is a "close window" button on the screen.

I liked the part about what Angela said about other members in Golo asking remedy directly from those posting abusive content.

"I liked the part about what Angela said about other members in Golo asking remedy directly from those posting abusive content."

I think she still operates under the fantasy that GoLo will somehow automagically just become civil one day without any effort required.

Thanks for posting this, Made. Many of us saw, too late, the blog post last night that mentioned this was on. It's good to be able to see and hear it at our convenience. Kudos!

I got through the first 8 or so minutes and then stopped. Here we have people discussing the lack of civility. Okay, that is fine. Then they get to the issue about illegals being able to go to community college. They showed a couple of negative golo comments relating to that issue. Then all three men immediately conclude that the authors of the comments are RACISTS. WOW. I guess these three are ready to become District Attorneys. Based solely on a handful of words they judge a couple of people as racists. Somehow, these guys having a discussion of civility rings pretty hollow to me.

Whatelse, while I agree that there is a knee jerk quality to some of the observations made about the comments, I do have to ask how many folks on GoLo are upset about those darn Chinese, for example, and are boycotting Chinese restaurants, etc.

I don't think the commentary is ENTIRELY racially motivated, but we'd be deluding ourselves if we presumed to pretend that at least SOME of it is. A rose by any other name...

This pinpoints the reason I rarely come to Golo these days. The invective and name calling outweigh the civil discourse and reasoned argument. I don't have time for incivility.

People are short on money now. People have become stressed out. Short tempers are coming out. It's this that I beleive is behind the outbust at predident Obama. And that lack of civility is different from that found in Golo, or at least the cause of it is. Online, one can type whatever they want to say and never have to open their mouth, or look someone directly in the eyes.

Maybe we should ask wral why they had all white speakers including \the host except for poor angela there fighting for golo. See how racist that sounds. Is that my core value. No it isn't. My core value and a reason for the passion I have obtained since golo is that not one sign said mexicans go home. It said illegals which is a big difference. Racism comes in all colors the last I witnessed and what I saw is people giving their opinion of what they believe, just like I do. You don't need a college degree to have an opinion. I try to be civil but it does get hard at times. The one thing I learned from home was don't say anything about anyone you wouldn't say to their face; I've tried to hold true to that core value. I personally think angela does a great job and I hope wral recognizes that. I wish she had added that racism is not the majority of the country's views as even Obama has said. I also wish when people speak againt the policies of this president we weren't called racist
