dehumidifier suggestions?

Published Sep. 21, 2009

We need to buy a dehumidifier for the  basement. We don't have a drain so hoping the dehumidifier has a decent sized pan.

Any suggestions.  We are looking at Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

one suggestion when you buy the dehumidifier buy a 5 gallon bucket too ... the bucket will be easier to carry up and down the steps then the dehumidifier holding tank ... plus depending on the size of the holding tank you may only have to carry the bucket up stairs to empty every few days ...

That doesn't sound like fun

It doesn't matter if you get a 25, 40, or 50 pint de-humidifier, the buckets are all too small. You won't be able to put a larger bucket in the machine so either way it is a pain. I have a 50 pint and empty it daily because of having no drain. Lowes has some inexpensive Whirlpool models. Also, if your basement gets below 55 degrees in the winter, check the operating range. Some do not operate below 55 degrees.

I like the idea of buying a bucket. We have a daylight basement so we can empty the pan/bucket outside the back door. Any suggestions for a particular brand of dehumidifier?

I bought one a few years ago, and it has it's own catch pan. I'd estimate its about 2 gallons. It has a handle and is easy to carry. Even the old one we had when I was growing up had a handle and was easy to carry. I don't remember the brand, but id works good, and in high humidity you may be emptying it once every day or so. Mine also has a port for attaching a hose to run to a drain. Probably won't help since you don't have a drain.

i thought all of them had drain thingys anyways? I know mine does. (of course I have a cow shaped one for the kido)

never mind.. i'm thinking of the humidifier

I wish I could be of assistance. I just dont know much about dehumidifiers. But I wanted to throw in what I DO love!! I LOVE "DAMP RID" cups! Actually, I buy the generic ones and they work great! No electricity needed! You just put the thing in the room or closet where moister is a problem, and it fills itself up with water! The crystal thingies in it, just draws the moister out of the air. Usualy the cups end up full in 2 to 3 weeks if it rains alot and the air is moist. Last year during the drout, I think it took like 5 months for the things to fill up. I know I'm off subject. Carry on!

Home depot has a good one. LG cost me around 240$ has worked great for about 7 months with no problems. LHD65EBL 65 pint per day model.

we have one.. its the a/c and dehumidifier together, and its portable. they only flaw... you have to have a windown for the tube to let the hot air out...it works great imo. and we drain it about once a month
