do mechanics treat women differently?

Okay, lately my car has been hestitating to start and making a loud clunking noise before it finally does start and then when I take off it sounds like there are marbles rolling around in the dash. So I take it to the chevy dealership and they have their courtesy van drop me off at work, which by the way I would like to know what happy meal that fool found his driver's license in, and they called me a second ago to tell me they found the problem and I need a new battery. Huh? All of those noises are coming from a bad battery? So then they tell me since they found the problem so quickly they were not going to charge me the $95.00 fee to assess my car and to put in a new battery it is going to cost me $170.00. WTF? I can buy a battery at autozone for $70.00 so I tell them that I will buy one elsewhere but then the guy tells me if I don't let them install the battery it will cost me the $95.00 and then I will still have to go buy a battery somewhere else and it will run me about the same amount. If I were a man would they be treating me like this? Probably not, they had my car for 30 min. before they decided it was only the battery, which I am betting I will pull out of that lot and it will start making that damm noise again. I am P.O.'d

They are probably correct in what they are saying as to the fees though. If you buy their overly priced battery, they will waive the diagnostic. If not, they need to make their money somehow so they will charge the fee.

I will say, the noise issue in your dash does not seem to be likely that it is the battery.

This place is supposed to be woman-friendly and seems to have great reviews, might be worth a try if it's convenient for you:

I don't personally use them as my son works on our cars for us. But I've heard good things about them. Good luck!

also that is standard practice from the incident you are describing. It's like a service call if you don't let them do the work. If you go and get a estimate for your car in a collision they take off the estimate charge if they do the work, or it's been that way with in the past. Same with my refrigerator. If I didn't let them fix the refigerator when they came, I'd be charged for a service call.
