do mechanics treat women differently?

Okay, lately my car has been hestitating to start and making a loud clunking noise before it finally does start and then when I take off it sounds like there are marbles rolling around in the dash. So I take it to the chevy dealership and they have their courtesy van drop me off at work, which by the way I would like to know what happy meal that fool found his driver's license in, and they called me a second ago to tell me they found the problem and I need a new battery. Huh? All of those noises are coming from a bad battery? So then they tell me since they found the problem so quickly they were not going to charge me the $95.00 fee to assess my car and to put in a new battery it is going to cost me $170.00. WTF? I can buy a battery at autozone for $70.00 so I tell them that I will buy one elsewhere but then the guy tells me if I don't let them install the battery it will cost me the $95.00 and then I will still have to go buy a battery somewhere else and it will run me about the same amount. If I were a man would they be treating me like this? Probably not, they had my car for 30 min. before they decided it was only the battery, which I am betting I will pull out of that lot and it will start making that damm noise again. I am P.O.'d

Hmmm? I have had this happen before. At least they WERE going to waive the diagnostic fee if you allowed them to change the battery. I know a lot of places wont and that pizzles me off. If I take my car somewhere and say it is making a strange noise fix it. They would still have to diagnose the problem in order to figure out what needs fixing. So why should I pay that diagnostic fee on TOP of what you are going to charge me to fix it? I think that in itself is a rip off.

sounds to me like you have no oil in the car. A battery or lack thereof doesn't cause noises.

They are probably correct in what they are saying as to the fees though. If you buy their overly priced battery, they will waive the diagnostic. If not, they need to make their money somehow so they will charge the fee.

Well I just called them back and asked them about the noise when I drive and they said since the battery was bad they were afraid to drive it anywhere thinking they might get stranded so they dont know what that is from.

That there is some bs. They obviously didnt diagnose the problem if you are STILL having the same problem.

I had a vehicle repaired a couple weeks ago. Because I had the repair done, the diagnostic fee was waved. If I had not had the repair done, they would have charged me the fee.

I will say, the noise issue in your dash does not seem to be likely that it is the battery.

Welcome to the world of dealership service centers... I think they would have done the same thing to a man, but I also think there are repair shops out there who do treat women differently. Do yourself a favor and find a good mechanic you can trust! You'll save a lot of money and aggravation.

This place is supposed to be woman-friendly and seems to have great reviews, might be worth a try if it's convenient for you:

I don't personally use them as my son works on our cars for us. But I've heard good things about them. Good luck!

not unless they are dishonest to start with.

also that is standard practice from the incident you are describing. It's like a service call if you don't let them do the work. If you go and get a estimate for your car in a collision they take off the estimate charge if they do the work, or it's been that way with in the past. Same with my refrigerator. If I didn't let them fix the refigerator when they came, I'd be charged for a service call.

There's a lot to be said for having one "family" mechanic that you trust to work on everyone's car. Our guy will pick up, diagnose, fix and deliver back for the cost of parts and labor - BOOM - done deal. He's the best - shameless plug - he's at the Ford dealership in Creedmoor!

Did they tell you up front there is a $95 "assessment" fee? I find most dealerships tend to be a lot more expensive to get car repair work done when compared to the smaller car repair businesses. Ask around and see where your friends take their cars for repairs. You need to try and find a mechanic you can trust. I think you are right though. When my daughter needs car work done I go with her...

If you were a man, you woulda lifted the hood and seen a loose battery, duh!
