feed or flee or stand your ground?

A lot of Labor Day weekend travelers are probably heading either to the beach or to the mountains for one last warm summertime outting.  For those going west into Asheville, beware of wildlife if you get deep enough away from civilization, especially where picnic areas are found. Seems that dumspters and food left on the ground have gotten the attention of some black bears. Two of these monster critters have been harrassing the picnic-goers at the popular Craggy Gardens Picnic Area and overlook. One of the bears was trapped, and the other was put down. Their aggressive behavior was brought on by the availability of scraps that filled the forest air with enough scent to trigger their hunger. They just followed their noses.

If you are encountered by a bear, go on a diet and throw them enough food to distract them, leave the rest, and calmly head for your car door. Or you can take your chance and see who gets your food. But if you do want to stand your ground and not give up your food, then I suggest some bear spray or a cattle probe, and a GOOD pair of running shoes.

Now on the other hand you're too poor to go out of town, and wished you were sitting at some beach right about now, then here's you a couple of windows to the ocean...

But whatever is on your agenda this weekend, I hope you are able to enjoy every minute of it...

and a GOOD pair of running shoes. "

LOL, good morning Made

It's a pity that bears have to be killed because people are stupid. As a long time camper, I learned very early that you NEVER leave food where a bear can see or smell it.

Hey Lolly! How you doing?

Good advice. There are bears in this area.We had one in our yard a about three years ago.

I used to live in Asheville, and Craggy Gardens wasn't but a 30 minute drive from my house. I used to always go up there. There's something about that place that is fascinating. I've been up there and sat in the parking lot as thick, puffy clouds would roll thru. I've been up there on super-clear days and you could see for miles and miles. And I've been up there and have seen deer, skunks, possums, raccoons, foxes, and many different birds...all during the same visit. But I've never seen a bear. Good thing, cause I would still go back. lol

Good morning Patsy!!! A bear in my back yard and I'm moving... lol

LOL! A Bear's visit would certainly make for a good post-vacation conversation piece. Good morning Made and everybody. :)

I don't think you can outrun a determined bear. However, when they haul you down and start munching on your tired and sweaty body, you can intone the blessing for them.

OMG I cant believe there is a post about a bear. I had a dream last night that I was up in the mountains with a friend of mine and we were walking down a wooded path. A bear popped out of the woods, chased us to our cabin, The bear was trying to beat down the door. We climbed the stone fireplace which went up really high. The bears got in, could not concieve climbing up to get us. My friend distracted the bear, I jumped to the couch , ran in my bedroom. My friend ran out the front door. I went out the bedroom window and ran around the side of the house. I saw a barstool. My friend was on the roof. I climbed up and we could see the bears down below looking for us. Turned out my friend had a picnic basket , and we ate lunch. LOL I have no idea what that dream is about.

I forgot to say GOOD MORNING everyone! HOpe you have a great day! It's so nice to have a long weekend off.
