never assume you'll remain anonymous

That's essentially the message in this post on NPR.org today, by Kevin Whitelaw.

The headline reads: "Gotcha! Why Online Anonymity May Be Fading" and here is an excerpt. Click on the link above to read it in it's entirety.

===

When Rosemary Port, a New York blogger, used her anonymous posts to call a New York fashion model a "skank" and a "ho," she had no idea that her name would soon be plastered across the pages of the New York Post.

In Port's case, it took a court order to reveal her identity, but the Internet, which gained a reputation for being an anarchic and wild place in its early years, is becoming less and less anonymous in many ways.

Some of the change is cultural. Users have been flocking to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, where they voluntarily share all kinds of details about their lives.

In some ways, the meteoric success of these sites could be a reaction to anonymous blogs and public comment boards, which can often devolve into name-calling and polemics. (A famous Internet axiom called Godwin's Law holds that the longer an online discussion continues, the higher the odds that someone one will compare somebody else to a Nazi.)

"The nasty anonymous world is certainly still there, but I think people are trying to create protected spaces where they are a little more insulated from that," says Mary Madden, a senior research specialist at the Pew Internet and American Life Project. "It is becoming increasingly difficult to think about being completely anonymous."

Great blog Angela. Everyone is responsible for the words that are forever written in stone.

/noah breaking out the invisi toad spray paint/

Ooops

in a way it's good and in another it's bad.. the underground part of the internet that prays on children and innocents needs to be exposed. While on the other hand I do not like how I can find a pic of my house so easily on google...

oops * preys lol

Hey - I am not worried. I am out there a LOVIN every minute of it. I am just like you read. Snarky, sarcastic, with a slightly skewed view of things at times. I will say what I say here right out in the open and have and probably will continue to anger people along the way.

Most however get a good chuckle from me.

Great blog Angela.Thank you and welcome back.

wrappiung you head in tinfoil....makes sense to me.

I heard that tinfoil wrapped around your computer made it amphibious or anonymous, one of the two or maybe both.....Is that true???

I'm really not too concerned about anonymity. Anybody who really wants to find me can. But why would they want to find an old liberal Episcopalian grandmother, respectably married, and staff to a couple of cats?

Sheba - you go girl! And as it says on Gingers profile " I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy" ...

If you own a computer that you purchases anonymously (in no way can it be traced back to you), and you only connect to the internet via a "free" internet connection (like in a restaurant that offers free wireless internet, or an unsuspecting neighbor that has an unsecured wireless modem), I believe you could surf anonymously. I don't think it could be traced back to you.

Not that I would condone that, but if I REALLY felt the need to browse or blog anonymously, that's how I would go about it.

"I heard that tinfoil wrapped around your computer made it amphibious or anonymous, one of the two or maybe both.....Is that true???"

I doubt it, my comment was just a joke ;)

My takeaway from the article is encapsulated in the following, "It might be entertaining to post anonymously, but it's not very interesting to read," says Harvard's Donath. "When people are going to be named, whether it's their real name or a persistent pseudonym, it takes them more of an effort to maintain the credibility of their name."

That is soooooooo true. Especially in a forum where certain members take a demented pride in number of "promotions" and multiple I.D.s such as we are inundated with here on GOLO. Maybe they see it as a badge of honor to be 'bad boys and bad girls'...I don't usually see it all thanks to Iggie.

Amen!!! OR - AMEN

Angela...from August 24th....http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/5852556/

I have no issues with this. If Golo went to full disclosure, I'd still post. As long as the rules were the same for everyone. Some folks on here already know me, where I live, etc.

No biggie.

"In the future, I think there will be pockets of outrageously irresponsible, anonymous people who will congregate in dark corners of the Internet, like on dark streets in disreputable parts of cities in the middle of the night," says Keen, who wrote The Cult of the Amateur."

It seems that there are some on here more than a little ahead of the learning curve on this one.

ANd taking this one step further, since we know some GOLO users have gathered away from the main site to escape WRAL's moderation efforts, then the WRAL management must also be ahead of the curve in dealing with negativity and nastiness. That said, I think congratulations are in order, Angela! GOOD JOB!

The more and more people are gaining access to the net the more THEY and some people want to know who is on it. Back before it was GUI (Graphic User Interface) and it was the good ole' USENET and ARPANET (it's still there, they just made it hard to access the boards). People didn't need to hide their MAC id's or their IP address. We didn't have as many Mal-users (malicious) on there, even back in the early 90's.

Now it's a virus. Windows has backdoor access. People can insert a worm into your email and sneak a look at who you are WHOIS or your terminal and accounts.

My question if we are demanding people to say who they are; will the Media be forced to use their REAL names and not fictional names they tend to use on screen/radio? Fair is fair, it can't be one sided.

This will drag out for years with appeals and countersuits. I have read that she posted the model's picture (HUGE libel) and addressed her by name, which is what got her in hot water. By the time this is done in court no one wins except the lawyers.

The Internet world has gotten smaller, and people need to learn what it and is not a libel issue. I have also read recently about smaller hosting companies being sued for releasing Registrar information publicly without a court order (I believe a company also lost their licensing to sell domain names).

It is time in ways for the internet to grow up but it is even MORE time for people to educate themselves about law and what one can and cannot "do" online. As you know Angela, in our world it changes daily. That's why I have attorneys, accountants and "good contacts" within the cyber-crime community to consult.

I get amazed at people that participate in social media yet really have no clue what it is about in many ways. Education.

I wouldn't expect to stay "anonymous" if I behaved in that fashion.

There are ways to deal with things without becoming the same, yourself.

For some people, the realization of what they say in writing hasn't hit home yet. What they say is just that... in writing. It's not much difference than a voice recorder taping someone speaking racial slurs over the phone, as was in a recent news story here in Raleigh. About the only difference is the fact that one could post something online that would cuase legal actions and that person claim is was another oerson using their computer.

I try not to do or say anything that my parents, my daughter, and my boyfriend would be ashamed of me for saying/doing...but sometimes I might rant about something to my closest buds...but even that is fairly benign. Anyone who thinks what they say on the internet is private is such a dreamer...I think there are 'devices' and 'programs' that simply make one's internet life a stream of sifted thru words awaiting the need to be 'of interest'...

I'm still the same old Paula, with the same coonhounds and same truck. I am a lot more Pro-Hunter now though, a lot more STOP TEARING DOWN NC'S NATURAL BEAUTY, and of course, still VERY Pro-Fire, EMS and LEO.

And if disclosure means anybody can stop by for dinner, well, you have to bring some Duplin wine, since I'm VERY Pro-NC farmers, too.

I really have nothing to hide, except for maybe my occasional sarcastic side. I don't post anything anywhere online that I wouldn't want my gramma to see.

Most of my online presence isn't anonymous, anyway, as I use the 'net to promote my small business...So with that in mind, I do have to be careful what I post.

I was always taught never put something in writing that you don't want everyone to read. I believe the same is true w/ blogs.

There's a related law of the Internet: "Reductio ad Hitlerum." Basically, if you're in an argument and you compare somebody to Hitler, you have just lost the argument.
