the peak of hurricane season...are you prepared for the worst?
Published Aug. 30, 2009Views: 490
It's that time of year again when we need to be ready for Mother Nature's surprises that can happen between now and the first of October. I'm talking about a potential visit from a tropical system coming to North Carolina.
North Carolina is seemingly a favorite destination for hurricanes and tropical storms. We've had our share in the past, and we are due again for one of these unwelcome visitors. Are you ready?
I have this gut feeling about the new disturbance out at sea that is predicted to develop into a depression. We've seen two storms already this year that "wanted to visit" North Carolina, but the driver of those two storms made them turn away and we were spared. The ocean tempertures are the warmest ever on record, and that worries me. That is true especially for the waters off the northeast coast of the US. Will this be the year our northern neighbors get a dose of destructing winds? Or will it be us, or Florida, or maybe even somewhere bordering the Gulf Of Mexico such as New Orleans? Noone knows, and only time will reveal the truth.
But like I said...I have this gut feeling someone's gonna get it from this developing storm. The photo shoiws the storm's location, and if you go to the National Hurricane Center's website, even they are predicting this system to rapidly intensify in the next 24 hours. I'm going to keep a very close eye on this during the next few days, with my fingers crossed that we are all spared.
I clearly remember Hurricane Fran. That monster hurricane taught me a very good lesson about not being prepared ahead of time. I was without food, cash, electricity, and water for over two weeks. Plus, downed trees blocked my path to the outside world. The only contact I had was through my car's radio. Hurricane Fran turned the Raleigh area into what looked like a war zone and did so in just a matter of hours as it's center passed over Apex and continued northward. I had no idea we were that vunerable to a hurricane, but we are.
I would love it if you all would post a short story about your experience with Hurricane Fran. Things like the damage you saw and how prepared you were. Even tips on what you will do the next time one comes our way. That would be good for the area's newcomers to read....

We watch the hurricane season like a hawk watching a hen house!! It can change my life at work in a heartbeat.
I love thunderstorms, always have. Ironically something so powerful and so beautiful causes me so much pain. I'm referring to migraines. Even so, there's something about storms that draw me in. I keep a bag packed in my closet, so if we have to stay over at work (we have in the past) I'm ready.
Love the blog!!

I imagine you have some pretty wild memories of what Fran did to the community. What makes Raleigh so vunerable is the fact that a lot of people moved here from hurricane-free parts of the us in the years following Fran. They might have heard of the area's destruction on their local news channels, but experiencing one has yet to occur. Those are the ones (like I was) that will likely be the least prepared if we get hit this year.

I bet you loved that Game last night Huh???
In Florida we would have Hurricame Parties though they would be nothing by the time they hit us...just an excuse to have a party most of the time *smiles* I have not been through one here yet nor do I wish to be. I just moved to this area from the Mountains after the last one hit here...signed the Girls up for school and they were making up that Saturday due to off from the Hurricane so they did not have to start until Monday.

Ahhh...so you missed the fun???? Lucky you! This place was torn up unlike anything I have ever seen when Fran came. That was my first hurricane experience. In the hours before it hit, I was so excited! Kind of like waiting on a coming snowstorm. Gosh was that ever a dumb way to be! lol The next one that comes, you can bet I'll have water and batteries and canded foods and candles and clean clothes and a full tank of gas!!!!!

Yeah - AFTER completely blowing off Fran and not even filling the tub with water.
11 days with no electricity or water teaches a good lesson....
