golo proof of identity
Published July 30, 2009Views: 5200
Need your thoughts here GOLO:
What type of proof of your identity would you be willing (or even unwilling) to provide to become a member of GOLO?
I know speculation will run wild here, and I am not going to stop it, but any input on this matter would be helpful. The word of the day here is: Accountability.
Have a thrilling Thursday.
Angela

If you want people to COMPLY and give you information that's honest, ask for "phone book" information or "public record" information. That's name, address.
You don't need DOB unless to VERIFY if it is the real user... I don't like providing FULL DOB. Month and year is fine FOR ME. You don't need to know THE DAY.
When I had creditors call trying to get somebody with the same first/last they can NEVER get my name pronounced right. Do you think I'll correct them? It's correct in the books!
WE (users online) fear this information LEAKING OUT and person X or 100 person X's IMPERSONATING US. thats the fear. If John Doe that was Born on 1/1/1900 in Anytown USA zip 00001 phone 000-0000 information leaks out how many people will IMPERSONATE that profile now that they have the DOB and address? Credit attacks!!

2. As soon as you do, either the stupid, or the uninformed will be the only ones who stay.
3. No one is dumb enough to give such information to those who themselves are anonymous on the boards.

That is some funny stuff.
Accountability on an internet forum is pretty hard to do. I visit SomethingAwful.com and it's forums. You pay 10.00 to join, and you are made aware of the rules and regs for the site. If you violate them you either get probation (meaning no posting for x/hours), ban (removed from the system and you have to pay 10.00 to get back on) or Perma-Ban (you are out, and even if you pay 10.00 to get back in you can still be removed if they find out you were perma-banned). There is also he11-ban where you can be in the system, but you essentially are on ignore for everyone on the system (no one sees you or hears you and you can post til your hearts content)
Their system works pretty good, and the extra revenue pays for the admins. GOLO's membership is just a small fraction of what SA has for registered forums users.

Only those members that are not smart enough to keep their personal information private get "stalked". Which is really overstating the problem.
In fact, you of all the people on here were the most naive. I personally cautioned you and others several times that you should be a more private. But hey, you laughed. Said you could handle it. Example:
"My full resume is available to everyone here on GOLO and has been for some time. I'm a highly contentious member, you either love me or hate me, and I've never had a problem." -RB
Even now, you still give out personal information and meet with "golo people". So, really, you've made your bed, and now you have to lie in it. But as a result, the rest of us have to hear you constantly complain and play the martyr.

Since this is a moderated environment, I would think that appropriate moderation and execution of "accountability" ramifications would get the desired results.
This would include moderators taking control when they see and recognize what we lovingly refer to as true "troll" behavior.

"I’ve seen personal threats on GOLO, but not much law breaking beyond that."
Well, that and blatant disregard for copyright laws that will eventually have Capital Broadcasting as a co-plantiff.
