all creatures great and small?

I'm a live and let live kind of person. I have no problems with most creatures and certainly none with those creatures in their own environment. Sure, I draw the line when they enter into "my" realm. But I hold no angst against them. It's nothing personal. I respect their role in the environment, just not mine!
There are a few creatures, however, that I will NEVER understand. Can someone please tell me what possible positive purpose a chigger has? Sure, they have given me a sadistic little laugh when I have found my non-friends subjected to their charms. But beyond that, WHY do they exist?
AGH!!! Perhaps it's simply a "welcome to the country" that I'm experiencing. Or perhaps they are saying I have invaded THEIR domain. Whatever! All I know is that some 20 grit sandpaper is looking REAL good right now for scrubbing my legs.
By the same token, I will never understand the purpose of fleas and ticks. But at least they are not plaguing me right now.
