garden update 7/20/09

Ok so after researching on the internet. I found some interesting ways to make inexpensive earth boxes without paying all that money.
Pictured here is the basic design. one bucket drilled for drainage and a pipe inserted to allow watering refill of the lower resovoir created by the space at the bottom when the buckets are placed inside of one another.
Small cup is placed through the bottom of the top bucket. the cup is inserted into a hole cut just small enough to not allow the cup to fall through.
Basically the desgn is supposed to keep water from evaporating from the soil and allowing the plant access to as much water as it needs without risking too much water.
I am testing this out on a small scale with a green pepper plant built exactly to specs found on youtube videos.(if your interested just search 5 gallon bucket gardens for lots of info on youtube)
The rest of my garden is growing very nicely. my runaway tomato plants have been corralled nicely using a triangular cage i got from homedepot. and we are now harvesting some nice banana peppers and poblano peppers. made a nice chili the other night using some of those. I will update on the bucket experiment later in the season. I want to give it a good chance.
I will note that while 5 gallon buckets are easier to come by cheap/free I would like to experiment with a smaller sized bucket for these plants that do not require alot of support or room to grow. and maybe even look into a trough style built from wood using the same principles using pondliner to make the reservoir.
