if i believed…

“I don’t have to prove anything to you!”
“I don’t have to answer your question!”
“They don’t have to respond to you.”
“It’s none of your business!”
“I don’t care what you think!”
Recognize any of these sayings? Sound familiar? Is it an argument between strangers? Between a couple? Someone being interrogated by the police with their lawyer present? Nope. It’s the often response we see on GOLO when someone asks about God and religion. It’s frustrating to atheists and unbelievers to see such responses on a topic that you would think people would be exuberant to share. But all too often, people seem to want to hide their god and religion under a bush. Those that do share a little, will often withdraw once the questions get tough.
I’m the complete opposite. If something interests me, or is a big part of my life, I share it. I advertise it. I tell people about it. I have several hobbies and collections that I pursue in life. Some would say I have a passion for them. Others might call it an addiction. But here’s the thing, it’s not a secret. Everyone that knows me, knows about my hobbies and collections. Why? Because I share them! I talk about them. My webpage is filled with information on them. I love to educate people on the various things that influence and bring joy to my life. When visitors cross my threshold, they immediately see artifacts from my hobby. Even my personalized car tag speaks of one of my loved hobbies.
So, what if I believed? What if I believed that there really was a God called Jehovah, that created the world and humans? What if believed that His son Jesus was real, and died for our sins? What if I believed in all the miracles, stories, and commandments of the bible? What if I believed that you find everlasting love with God in heaven, but will be tormented for eternity in hell if you go the opposite direction? What would I do? Would I hide it under a bush? Would I be the one saying, “I don’t have to prove anything”? No, I would not!
If I believed, I would be shouting it from the mountain tops. I’d be on every street corner, telling every ear I could find about the wonderful love of God. I’d be in the malls handing out leaflets. I’d have a website detailing God’s power and love, and what it can do for you. You wouldn’t be able to shut me up. I’d want all to share in what God has to give, and to help my fellow man avoid the punishment for sin if they don’t come to the Lord. Ask me a question, I’ll have an answer. Ask me to prove God exists, and I’ll do it. Soaking wet logs bursting into flames? No problem. Sun moving backward? No problem. Healing the sick? No problem. Raising the dead? No problem. You want a sign, I’ll give you a sign! You want proof? I’ll give you so much proof that you’ll be on your knees, praying to God. If it says it in the bible, and if I believed it, then it can and will be done. If Jesus says I can move a mountain with faith as little as a mustard seed, and I believed it, then by golly name the mountain you want me to move! Ask me questions! Challenge my faith! Bring it on! Nothing is out of bounds, if I truly believe.
These are the things I would say and do, if I believed. And I find it frustrating that the so-called true believers won’t. Oh, they’ll advertise their favorite football team on their car bumper. But when it comes to God, it’s “I don’t have to prove anything”, “It’s none of your business”, etc. I wish I did believe. Then I would show people the true power of the biblical God.
Note to the ignorant, the logically impaired, and the downright stupid: This blog is NOT an attack on religions, gods, Christians, believers, or even Billy goats. It’s me voicing my frustration and dismay at the fact that some people hide their religion rather than advertise it, as I would if I believed.

Many do not know how to convey that because it is such a personal and intimate detail. Faith is the part that makes it individual and unique to each whom holds it. Faith in something greater....something beyond what we can touch and see. Faith is as differing as the individual.
