self serving psyco rant

So I go to my local Foodlion to do a little shopping, when I say little, I have $50.00 left in my food budget and need to buy enough groceries to last till my next payday which comes on the 15th of this month, Not really an issue as we have become accustomed to it.

Anyway here is where it starts.

I got my stuff and standing in line with my handbasket with what I believe is about $48.00, 11 items, in front of me is a guy that has a screaming child a rolling buggy overflowing with goods, I'm thinking theres got to be over $300.00 in that buggy, so anyway, total comes to $347 and change and the dude pays with foodstamps, $347.00 in food stamps, I'm thinkin thats alot of foodstamps, my food budget is about $200 a month for me and my kid, anyway what happend next is what set me off,

The dude plunks down $80 cash for 2 cases of beer and a carton of cigarettes

Now I dont mind when a person needs a helping hand, but this made me furious, I dont know how this all works but I figured the 350 in foodstamps was for the whole month ??  but I figure the beer and ciggs wont last a week,

SO IF THIS GUY HAS GOT $80.00 A WEEK TO SPEND ON FREEKIN BEER AND CIGARETTES MAYBE HE SHOULD QUIT THAT $#!T AND FEED HIS FAMILY WITH HIS OWN FRIKKIN MONEY !!!!!!!!!!!!

THE MONEY ONE GETS AS A HELPING HAND SHOULD NOT ALLOW FOR FRIVOLOUS SPENDING OF MONEY THAT COULD OTHERWISE BE USED FOR SELF SUPPORT, I AM SO PISSED THAT THIS IS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!

PINS AND NEEDLES NEEDLES AND PINS A HAPPY MAN IS A MAN THAT GRINS :) :)

I FEEL MUCH BETTER NOW ... THANKS FOR LISTENING !!

They had the largest tv I'd ever seen in my life (brand new) and 2 cartons of cigs on the table. But no food. Sigh."

It's all about values..or lack there of

The clients I work with (on my job) have more food in their cubbards than I do.

I just figured govt assistance is a prosperous career choice. Stop by the govt assistance offices or the public housing neighborhood you'll see many people that are overwieght, covered with jewelry, driving nice vehicles and breeding like they have unlimited access to funds.

The sad part is the people that actually NEED govt assistance get eaten alive and wiped out by people that prefer govt assistance.

The sad part is the people that actually NEED govt assistance get eaten alive and wiped out by people that prefer govt assistance"

best post of the day

There's plenty of honest poor people who don't beat the system. Fact is, he can buy all the beer he wants if he has the case. The card pays for the OK items.

There should be a public listing of who and what addresses are receiving welfare, including 'food stamps,' free lunch, Section 8 rent supplement, etc. This isn't to shame anyone, but to let the taxpayer see where the money goes. There are some cheaters, but most are not. There are also free loaders living off the recipients.

Its only gonna get worse as long as the dems have the floor.

You are absolutely right Haylard! I mean, the Republicans will address this problem and fix it just like they did when they were in office!

Oh wait, they didn't do squat and blaming it on the Dems shows misplaced hostility. It's a stereotype, and it's wrong.

There are no easy answers here, but blaming it on the "dems" is a conservative scapegoat.

My neighbor gets food stamps and medicaid. She drives an Escalade.

gucci the guy bought the beer on Obamas watch be fair we get to complain same as you did when W was in charge.

Girl, I agree totally! Dont' get me wrong, I don't think just because you need gov't asst that you don't deserve any extras, but you dang sure don't need to be buying cases of beer and cigs regularly...

"There are no easy answers here, but blaming it on the "dems" is a conservative scapegoat."

Blaming the Demos who happen to control a supermajority in the Senate and a majority in the house AND the white house, seems a reasonable thing to do, doesn't it?

Please don't tell me you think Hussein is going to crack down on food stamp fraud... those are his constituents after all.

"The sad part is the people that actually NEED govt assistance get eaten alive and wiped out by people that prefer govt assistance"

Amen.

Such are the totally inefficient "solutions" provided by government. Rife with abuse, waste and lack of oversight.

and as a side note, I think anyone who gets welfare should have 2 drug test every month, & if you if you have have kids with welfare you should have to get the depo shot every three months before they refresh your cards. If you cannot afford to take care of the ones you have you shouldn't be able to have more, now once u are off welfare, the shots stop & then u can reproduce, call me a commy or whatever, (which I am NOT) but it is not fair u can keep having kids when our tax dollars already support the ones you have. Oh, by the way, yes sometimes I lean a little towards "socialism" like canada, I like the idea of health care 4 all etc... and people get up in arms but they dont' realize we've had socialist programs 4 years, that is EXACTLY what food stamps, head start 4 kids etc... is, they are socialist programs which basically are nothing more than benefits given to the needy on our taxes, I jsut feel you should have 2 drug test 2 receive gov't benefits & not b able 2 keep birthing

Please don't tell me you think Hussein is going to crack down on food stamp fraud... those are his constituents after all.

Oh, I'm sorry! I had no idea Sadam Hussein escaped the death penalty! Oh wait! You mean PRESIDENT OBAMA. Sorry, your xenophobia was blinding me for a second.

I happen to agree that buying cigs and beer is shameful. I do NOT however think it's one party's fault. It has become a situation which has spiraled out of control. I have no idea how to fix it and I don't think Washington or our State governments do either.

Back the hell up. I just reread that sentence. His constituents??? You mean only poor foodstamp using, Escalade driving folk voted for him? Your prejudices are rampant. I'm a self-supporting woman who lives in a beautiful home, is higly educated and gets ZERO dollars from my government. I worked Pres. Obama's campaign, and the other folks who were there were some of the most articulate open-minded and educated people I've ever seen.

For many, not all, it's all about the bling ... that's where the money (earned or illgotten) goes before food. It's the image, not the reality they live.

Too many times I've stood in line in the grocery store and seen some outrageous things our taxes have paid for that I couldn't afford. Only to see them drive away in a car I couldn't or wouldn't pay for.

Yes, it happens a lot and it's thanks to a government that is great at creating 'solutions' and then not monitoring them.

All the more reason to fear the Cap and Trade nonsense, universal health discussions etc.

We can't afford more government nonsense they will not be honest about or truly govern over.

genie, the only thing wrong with the idea of giving depo (or other forced birth control) to all is this:

Not all women can take the shot, nor can they use the birth control. First there are allergies to latex. Then there are those that cannot take birth control pills due to having severe depression (like I had), blood clot risks, etc. The depo shot is just as bad or worse for some as birth control pills. I had the implants, and I was spotting or having breakthrough bleeding for 2 years every single day before I finally had it taken out. The lower doses of birth control I was on, and I got pregnant with my second child even though I took it religiously. The rhythm method just does not always work for all. There are reactions to spermacides. So, the government getting involved in this opens them up to a world of problems.

I know how you feel Ya Reckon.. I was recently behind a woman at the grocery store that also paid with food stamps, NOW, like you I don't mind giving anyone a hand UP, but these hand OUTS are getting out of control. She was dressed top notch, gold and diamond rings on every finger and when I went to the parking lot, she was loading her bags into a CADILLAC.. That really peeeved me. I personally know of a single mom that tried to get help for her and her 13 yr old son, and was turned down. She ended up at the food bank so they could eat. She works part time, only because thats all she can get and the kids father refuses to help. She was was told, "sue the dad for child support" by social services, That would do nothing, he doesn't work. NO ONE wanted to help her, but there are some getting it ALL. I know its ALL races abusing the system, so this isn't racial. I just think after a reasonable amount of time, GET OFF YOUR REAR, GET A JOB, AND SUPPORT YOURSELF!! WHEW!! Now I feel better too.

Nancy, could you please explain the correlation between welfare recipients who don't deserve help and the millions of Americans without healthcare how do?

Thanks

Gucci, I'd be happy to answer if it were not for your history of being abusive in response.

Rosebud, years ago when my children were small, I was laid off. My unemployment wasn't enough. I applied for food stamps hoping it could help temporarily until I could find employment again. I lived in a singlewide in Spring Lake that was awful, but all I could afford. Ex was only playing $50 a week per child in child support. He was paid under the table and so his income was much more than he reported. I had bought a new car when my last one finally died out just 8 mths. earlier. I was told that I did not meet the requirements because of that car. I couldn't sell it for what was owed. She told me to turn it back in. I had a 2 year old with serious severe asthma and i needed my car to get him back and forth to the Dr's and my daughter was in kindergarten. She rode the bus, but what if she got sick at school and had to come home? And this lady next to me was driving a Cadillac SUV and parked right in front, walked in full of gold and diamonds, and got her stamps.

Actually, i'm not abusive at all. I find most are too sensitive to take an opposite opinion.

The two items have nothing in common. I actually feel this man shouldn't qualify for foodstamps, if he can afford smokes and beer. Perhaps the rules should be tightened. If he can afford that, then that tells me he shouldn't receive benefits.

Of course, one could argue, even if we take his foodstamps away, he's still going to buy smokes and beer. That means, there are little hungry mouths at home which won't be fed. No legislation can change a human. If he's scum, he'll be scum on foodstamps or not.

And the kids starve.

The welfare system and food stamps and Add to dependent children programs needs to be abolished. I’m sorry but it’s not our government job to ensure everyone is successful. It has been nothing more than politicians buying votes and sticking it to the taxpayers. And to think all this started with LBJ, one of the most corrupt presidents our country has ever known.

Single moms and dads as well as 2 parent families at times need help, especially when the other parent is a dead beat or a parent can't find work. People can't always help themselves or get back on their feet easily when they fall on hard times, but some of these living off the government can. Sell the gold and diamonds, sell the expensive cars and designer clothes, sell the big house and down size, Give the ones that truly need help a chance. Its not right and the system needs to be fixed.

I'd like to thank y'all for chiming in.

I'm going to bed early tonight so I can get up early and go to work and make my contribution.

Gucci, your responses are not a debate or discussion but abusive, no matter how you try to diminish your biting comments.

As to government programs, good intentions gone seriously awry and costing everyone more and more is not a solution, it's a problem.

Thank you Nancy. When you resort to name calling and telling me my comments are hostile, it tells me you are too sensitive. I appreciate your opinion. Have a nice evening. :)

"Oh, I'm sorry! I had no idea Sadam Hussein escaped the death penalty! Oh wait! You mean PRESIDENT OBAMA."

No, it's Hussein.

"Back the hell up. I just reread that sentence. His constituents??? You mean only poor foodstamp using, Escalade driving folk voted for him? Your prejudices are rampant"

Whoa, your stereotypes are running loose. "Poor and Escalade driving folk". Yep, I'd imagine those are just the types who would vote for the "handout in every pot" prez.

"I worked Pres. Obama's campaign, and the other folks who were there were some of the most articulate open-minded and educated people I've ever seen."

Talk to me again in a year or two about how "open minded" they are , after their 401k's , jobs, and children's futures are totally in the tank. We'll see how "articulate" they remain.

"When you resort to name calling and telling me my comments are hostile, it tells me you are too sensitive. I appreciate your opinion. Have a nice evening. :)"

One only needs to read your personal attacks to anyone you disagree with to know your style. It's abrasive.

The school where I work participates in the Backpack Buddies program. One particular family was nominated to recieve the backpacks of food for the weekend, and I have been shocked at how bad those 2 kids REEK of cigarette smoke when they come to school. They live in a trailer, and I'm not sure if either parent works. But my thing is, if you can afford to spend that much money on CIGARETTES, you ought to be able to afford food for your kids. Of course these people accepted the food, and I wonder sometimes if they sell it or consume it. I just think if you don't NEED something like that, don't TAKE it, so that other people who indeed have a need can benefit. But that's just me.

Again, I thank you. I've not said one mean thing to you tonight. :)

I'm convinced it would be cheaper to reduce the criminal fraud in these hand out programs than increasing them.

welfare is not a "right"...healthcare is not a "right." Instead, under the guise of compassion, we have been gifted by our corrupt politicians with a safety net that is really a "safety sectional sofa" for some and nothing for others. this is part of the wonderful redistribution of wealth(really redistribution of income, not wealth)that b.o. referred to in the campaign. liberalism=generosity with others' property.

I agree that there is much too much fraud in the welfare system and it needs to be stopped.

My comment about this particular story is....

We do not know the 'other person's story' when we run into them out in public. We do not know who they were buying for and why they chose to buy what they did. It is hasty indeed to judge someone so harshly on one short encounter in the store. If they do not deserve to be on welfare and it has been documented over time... fine, rant away! Better yet, turn them in so something constructive can be done.

I work at a grocery store part time (2nd job)... I see that ALL THE TIME. The ones that are my favorite, are the ones that pay with $150 to $300 in Food Stamps (EBT Card) then walk over to the customer service desk and pay $50 to $100 worth of lottery for the week. And yes, there are plenty that do this.. it's not a "rare few".

I keep wanting to tell them that I want 1% of their winnings since my taxes just bought their groceries so they woudl have the cash to play that lottery

all welfare should be shut off to those who have never held a job or have to many babies they cant feed.

The people who have been laid off and cant find jobs, they can have more of that money

My mom's been griping about stuff like this since the early seventies when I was a little kid and my parents were recently divorced. Ford was president back then.

;)

She has NEVER stopped complaining about it, and we've had a variety of elected leaders from both sides of the fence.

I think the issue needs to be addressed, but I'd hardly say it matters who is in the white house. It matters who is in congress, however.

Fact of the matter is it will never be fixed because no majority of any elected officials will have the intestinal fortitude to weather the slander and the hate campaign which will be immediately leveled against them by HARD CORE LIBERALS and the Liberal Press. Gang I said any elected officials for a reason. I do not believe any Political Party will ever fix it. We are talking 5th and 6th generation welfare recipients, during those generations both parties have been in charge, and neither has had the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the press and the HARD CORE LIBERALS.

Icarpe, actually, the republican congress did force welfare reform to a point in the mid 90's. And as you say, there was a hue and cry that went up by various groups around the country stating that children would fall through the cracks etc.

Amazingly, they did not and in fact it reduced the welfare numbers substantially and many prior welfare recipients did go off welfare after gaining employment.

This link shows in depth coverage of welfare historically through charts and supported data:

http://www.neoperspectives.com/welfare.htm

They do have a debit card today for foodstamps. That is so the people who get them are not "embarrassed" to use them. Folks, they are NOT embarrassed. They see them as a RIGHT. A lot of times the people getting foodstamps will buy things and then go outside and give them to family members/friends/etc, and that person gives them $, then they can buy the beer, the cigs, and the lottery tickets.

I feel that people should only be able to get welfare for a certain amount of time. And it should not be dependent on the amount of kids you have. You have 2 kids, and are on welfare, WHY do you need to be able to have any others on the Government dime? Sorry, but they need to just overhaul this system.

OH, and if you are illegal NO WELFARE, NO PROGRAMS, NO SCHOOLS FOR YOU. If you have kids that are born here, TOO BAD, they are NOT citizens. It is just stupid to give our services to people who are NOT citizen and are not here legally.

SpunkyCancerWarrior----I wonder if that family was the same one listed on an Angel Tree I looked at a few years ago. I looked at the tree thinking I'd see things like clothes, relatively inexpensive toys (like Barbies and toy cars). But NOOOOOOOO---this family of 5 had things like a 60 inch TV for Dad, a REALLY nice VERY EXPENSIVE sophisticated microwave for Mom, a NEW car for the teenager, and a Playstation and about 25 games for it for the 5 year old twins. There was not ONE thing on their Angel tree wish list that I already owned or could afford to even think about buying for myself. IMO, Hey, if you already own what you NEED and only have exorbitant WANTS then you really aren't a candidate for a wish tree! Leave your spot open for someone who is IN NEED, not in WANT!

P.S. I haven't bothered to look at another Angel Tree ever since.
