visit a national park for free

Published Jul. 5, 2009

A few weeks ago our family decided to include a visit to Appomattox Court House National Park in our vacation plans.

We had a pleasant surprise when we pulled into the national park -- our visit would be free!

For those of you who are interested in taking advantage of skipping the admission cost, two more "fee-free" weekends are coming up. On July 18-19 and August 15-16, 100 national parks will allow visitors in for free.

that's great information, thanks

tkx for the free info, esp if it involves parks and critters and nature. All my fav topics.

I had not heard of this. Thanks for blogging it

Great information...Appomattox is one of my favorite parks to visit. Absolutely beautiful place.

OR -- The drive was great. We took back roads all of the way. I wish we would have left about two hours earlier, though, so we could have seen more of the buildings and memorials.

We had a Union re-enactor discuss the surrender for an hour. I would have loved to hear the Confederate re-enactor, but getting my family to sit for an hour was a blessing itself! LOL!

We're planning on visiting National Park in Greensboro soon. :-)

hawk, have you ever heard of the outdoor drama, First For Freedom? It's held in Halifax,,not sure of the dates. I went years ago.

Hawk...I'm betting you'll love Gettysburg. But be studied up on it so you wont be overwhelmed. There's a lot to see and digest there. On going to Appomattox I also like to take mostly backroads. Lately my favorite route is north on 501 from sanford until I get to Brookneal, Va. Then I head east on 40 till I get to small crossroads called Phenix. From there north on 727 (Red House Rd.) which goes straight into Appomattox. eat little road away from the hustle and bustle of the normal routes. Takes longer, but the ride is enjoyable.

No -- is it still being held?

We have an organization in Snow Camp that puts on two productions "The Sword of Peace" and "Pathway to Freedom." I'm a short drive away, but for some reason have never gone. I need to add that to my "to-do" list. :-)

What's the Halifax drama about?

here's the info,,not sure what dates it's held though

(Mr. Williams was my high school history teacher)

"First for Freedom" is one of the longest running outdoor dramas presented in North Carolina. The drama, written by Halifax County playwright Maxville B. Williams, depicts the events that led to the adoption of the Halifax Resolves, the first official declaration of independence from England by any colony, on April 12, 1776. For ticket information, please call the Halifax County CVB at (252) 535-1687 or (800) 522-4282

He was your teacher?! Did he have lots of great stories when you had him? That is my favorite type of teacher. :-)

I did a quick Google search, but it said that July 3 was the last show.

I think that I will ask my husband to take me to the Snow Camp drama for my birthday. (Entertainment and history all rolled up into one--Yay!)
