poverty in the usa

Published Jul. 3, 2009

Why do most folk speak of poverty worldwide and then speak of poverty in the USA as if it's similar? I've traveled to some poor countries, seen the poor in the USA, and searched the internet for poverty stricken areas of the world. I conclude that the ONLY country in the world where the poor are FAT(comparatively speaking) is the USA...why is that?

I guess because they can get all the aid mentioned below, so they have plenty of resources to obtain food and then make poor food choices, while at the same time they may be less active that those that are currently and actively employed. In other words, eating more bad food and moving less.

The question I would have is if they make poor food choices, why is that?

Hawk-fan, I did think about that. It is more expensive to eat healthy.

hawk_fan, are you in favor of restrictions when it comes to WIC purchases?

BTW, I had a cellmate back in the late 70's that told me: "Paul, you can eat 5lbs of lard a day, do 500 pushups and 500 situps and come outa here like a rock." He did and I didn't...lol

WIC is restricted, I think. Milk, cereal, and certain types of food. I had always assumed the food stamp program, though, wouldn't allow for soda, chips, or cookies. I thought it was for items such as flour, meat, beans, tuna, etc.

"Because junk food is cheaper"

Define junk food.

Are fresh potatoes & bags of rice, sacks of flour, frozen chicken and canned beans JUNK food? If so, I agree.

Hunger is one thing, and poverty is another. There's no excuse for hunger in the USA.

Poverty is defined as an income under $10,400 for one. Add $3,400 for each other household member. That is hard to live on in Raleigh. That's $200 a week. Hard to pay rent on that.

Imagine someone living on a SSI check of about that. Now, if they get into section 8 housing, that would mean about 225 bucks for rent. Food, clothes, gas, sales tax are the same for them and others.

"It is more expensive to eat healthy."

Yep. I buy fresh fruit for snacks each week, and it's amazing how much it can cost.

Last night they were talking about a documentary called "Food, Inc." Supposedly our veggies have less nutrition and flavor today than they did 30 years ago because corporations are mass producing our food. I'm interested in seeing the movie.

hawk..personally..I think WIC purchases should exclude MOST sugar and fat purchases.

It used to be that you could buy any food product with food stamps when I worked in a grocery store years ago.

WIC, however, is very selective, and you can only buy what exactly is on the voucher.

DJ -- must you always argue semantics?

The point that I was trying to make is that a person might go to buy a bag of oranges and discover that they are $8. That seems pricey so they pick up the individual wrapped cookies on sale that are $4.99.

There was talk about food stamps being accepted at local farmer markets. Did that ever come to be I wonder?

Our definition of poor is skewed.

However, if the people we consider to be poor will just hold on - - they will have your money soon - - and then you too can be fat.

JOO

I have alot of people(tobacco processing plant) that I work with that have single-family farms. They provide me with fresh veggies in season for free. The past 2 years all I've eaten is veggies and meat(no white anything, potatoes, flour, etc.). I've lost weight and feel great.

WIC isn't food stamps. The two are different programs.

WIC is for women, babies, and children.

B/C there are no people in this country that fall into the definition of poor. The "fat poor" can get all the food they want....the kind of food that isn't good for them.

You've seen the poor, some of the countries I've been in there are people that do not know where their next meal is coming from, LITERALLY!!!.....now that's poor.....and very disturbing. Its been yrs since I was in India but its still haunting me. (I worked there in Andrea Pradesh for 3 months....south east India)

Manila in the Philippines and Guatemala City have very poor slum areas too, the abandon children live in the dump....like rats.

Whenever I went out of the country (usually for 3 to 4 months at a time) the first thing I always noticed when I got back was how fat everybody is.

Winston -- our county is doing a produce drop off for the local food banks. For those people who had a bumper crop of squash, tomatoes, or what have you, they can drop the items off early in the day and they will be distributed to families in need. Too bad the squash bugs did our garden in.

JOO..why do the poor have to "hold on"..they're already fat.

PS. Most people in South America are slim & fit for the most part.....but all the big cities have the abandoned children. Very sad, people in the US have no idea how lucky they are to be in this country.....like I said, no poor people here IMO.

hawk-fan: There was talk about food stamps being accepted at local farmer markets. Did that ever come to be I wonder?

Yes. I know of at least one vendor at the State Farmer's Market that accepts food stamps.

Winston

I was referring to the fact that the now poor fat people will be eating more healthy once they have your money and my money after the redistribution that is ongoing. Then we will all be eating the less expensive “fattier” foods and join their ranks.

JOO

gecko..now that is cool...there needs to more of that...even if it needs to be mandated.

JOO...don't say that..that's depressing(he says as he kinda sorta maybe ignites the hydro that he found between his fingertips).

Well, regardless of what one eats “rich or poor” walking is still cheap - - everybody can afford to walk off some of the pounds.

The poor in this country (truth be known) are probably no fatter than the rest of us.

Our nation’s girth is growing all the time.

I think I’ll go for a walk - - I need to lose some weight and I haven’t hit the poverty level just yet.

JOO

So, do you all think the gubermint should be able to set guidelines for what food stamps can be spent on?

Again, seeing healthy food is more expensive, this makes this question more controversial.

JOO, although walking is free, the "poor" cannot afford gym memberships or putting their children in martial arts, dance classes, some sports programs, etc.

This could be another reason why the "poor" children are obese, compared to the healthy, athletic children of more financially prosperous families.

Wabi..I think if the govt. mandated green beans over potato chips, the cost in the long run would be easier to absorb.

Could be Wabi Sabi - - who knows for sure.

If one is truly poor for whatever reason, there is probably a certain amount of depression that goes with the financial situation.

Could be a lack of motivation to try to improve one's self.

I do know this however, legislation will not slim people down. People at some point have to do some things for themselves.

It's not all about money.

JOO

Wabi, do you think if the govt. provided gym memberships, etc. to the poor, we'd see a difference in the obesity of the poor?>

Winston, I was actually wondering about that, but I am no economic guru. lol.

JOO, I totally agree with your last comments.

Wabi, that is one tough question. I am a social worker and have worked in social services for about 10 years and the problems go so deep. I recently began teaching a budgeting class for adults and the level of illiteracy is astounding. The simple things you and I understand are so far beyond what many of these food stamp recipients comprehend that further limiting them is not really fair. Not sure if this is a good argument or not, maybe just more of an observation. I don't really know what the answer is because lord knows there are plenty of opportunities for education and learning but so few take advantage of them.

I just found some rice in the cupboard and threw it in the trash...mixed me a bourbon and coke zero...I'm good.

Winston I offer a toast with my Crown and Seven.

JOO

Gecko, aren't some of the problems years of cooking a certain way that has been passed down in the families, so you actually will have to literally reteach and break old traditions to make a difference?

Then you factor in the depression and possible low-self worth JOO talked about, and it is a difficult situation for people to overcome.

gecko...you admit opportunities for education are there...how do you feel about the govt. redistributing MORE wealth to those trying vs those that don't?

JOO..never mix Crown...ice only in a small tumbler....I'm saving up to move residence so I'm drinking on the cheap...bourbon rule #1: if it's cheap...mix it.

JOO...forgive me..those are my rules...mix away..it's your sheet

"I recently began teaching a budgeting class for adults and the level of illiteracy is astounding."

Did they not attend school? How old are these adults you're speaking of?

I do not understand how anyone can go to school and come out illiterate anymore, let's say, in the last 30 years?

A can of Seven-Up will do 8 to 10 drinks - - I am not abusing the Crown. LOL

JOO

"WIC purchases should exclude MOST sugar and fat purchases"

Fat is very good for children, and adults. It is only bad if too much. Don't fall into the trap of FAT IS BAD.

Here’s a fact.

You are what you think about.

The person that thinks that they have always had nothing and will never have anything can’t see beyond the day. One of the very last things on their mind is how healthy they can prepare their next meal.

For any program to have any value to an individual, that person has to buy into the fact that it will do them some good and act on it.

Unfortunately in this country we have taught the less fortunate that we will throw money at them, thus enabling them to sustain life. Not quality lives but continue to eat and breathe.

True reform will only come when one can see that they can be a productive part of society and become a contributor as opposed to just waiting for the next food stamp or check. Until that time the cycle continues.

JOO

I've seen ral poverty, too. You're right. We have the richest, fattest, most pampered "poor" people on the planet. They have TVs, microwaves, cable, cellphones, refridgerators, cars, CDs, rnning water, flushing toliets and welfare. There are people on this planet who would think our poorest people live like gods. When a child starves to death in America, someone goes to prison for it. When a child starves to death in Africa, no one gives a tinkers dam.

Maybe it's the fact that our poor are so well off that makes Obama so determined to create more of them.

potato chips are expensive and I don't think on the WIC list. Wic items are listed on the shelves.

woo this is getting deep for this late at night but I'll give it a shot ;) since ya'll have asked some very important questions.

On a personal level I have little issue with some programs b/c somebody has to be the janitor and lunch lady. These jobs do not pay well and rent and utilities are high so I think they deserve some help (that is the bleeding heart side of me). On the other hand we shouldn't raise people to think it is okay to chose a low paying job b/c the gov't can help pay your bills. The purpose of such programs I feel should be more limited to how long you can receive the benefit. On the other hand you don't want to take food away from children whose parents make bad choices with money.

djofraleigh, do you think the govt. should decide 'too much fat' in the foods for subsidized eating?

WIC eligible food list is here:

http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/benefitsandservices/foodpkgregs.HTM

Food stamps can be used for any food item, not necessarily healthy.

http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=2226

As far as learned behavior and cooking skills go that is a tough one. Breaking that cycle is tough. In a county where I previously worked a program existed that food stamp recipients had to attend. It's purpose was to teach better food choices, how to shop and cook. It was successful. Budget cuts took it away.

I am trying to mirror this program in my budget class. I found a public health educator who is helping and I hope it pays off not just for the students but for all us taxpayers too.

The easiest answer is because the worst food for you, is also the cheapest. The poor - for the most part buy what they can afford. To truly eat healthy, is expensive.

Then you get hooked on the high fat/ high carbs. Combined with culture eating ("southern cooking" and such).

Potato chips are often on sale, though, the BOGO offers. And, no, they aren't on WIC. Chips can be purchased with food stamps, though.

gecko..no matter what the govt. does, unqualified parents will see to it that some children aren't taken care of properly.

JOO.."True reform will only come when one can see that they can be a productive part of society and become a contributor as opposed to just waiting for the next food stamp or check. Until that time the cycle continues."

JOO, what can make 'one see' ?
