poverty in the usa

Why do most folk speak of poverty worldwide and then speak of poverty in the USA as if it's similar? I've traveled to some poor countries, seen the poor in the USA, and searched the internet for poverty stricken areas of the world. I conclude that the ONLY country in the world where the poor are FAT(comparatively speaking) is the USA...why is that?

There is a whole undergound economy and culture in the 'poor.' They often have kids only because that ups their entitlement and guarantees assitance. A friend's 40+ year old daughter had two kids, got all the asistantance stuff. Kids were scrawny, unwshed; she was huge, with the whole hair/nails thing going on. She'd sit and watch TV, read romance novels and eat a whole bag of chips or 3/4 of a cake. Kids would come in, see her eating, say they were hungry, and she'd snap at them "I just fed you two hours ago! Go outside." She got into g/ment housing, practically zero rent/utilities. Had child support looking for her ex. Oh, she had ex staying with her in her g/ment housing, BTW!

This is not an isolated occurance - it is rampant, and they educate each other on how to make it work. These people are as slick about their finances and entitlements as the bankers and their lawyers. Maybe not book-learned, but definitley 'system savvy.' *sigh*

oh and then they leave the store after purchasing 300 on their ebt card and then stroll into the mcdonalds and buy 3 bags of fast food

you should see all the garbage people buy with their ebt cards, its nasty

Nancy -- I have had some great students and co-workers over the year so that helps a great deal. :-)

Well, I really should turn the computer off and head for bed. When my young 'un gets up early tomorrow, there'll be no rest for the weary.

Thanks all for the great discussion!

Thanks, Winston! LOL! :-o

"I also wish that legislators would throw their ideas to real live teachers before introducing them on the floor of the General Assembly."

I hear you. Seems that what was once a 'local' system (public school) has branched out so that everyone who hasn't a clue gets to make all the decisions on the classroom level implementation of education.

It's totally upside down, and we see the fallout of that approach. I commend you for being dedicated enough to keep trying! I could NOT do what you and my two sisters do, I have a short fuse on the igorance of those higher up the 'food chain' and would no doubt be fired on the spot :)

hawk_fan: "It drives me crazy that all of the "best practices" that I learned in graduate school are rarely allowed because of central office or legislative mandates.:" When I become king of the world, I'm going to appoint you education czar...bring your barf bag...blood will be shed

LOL hawk. He did stay at home free while he went to college and I even gave him 6 months free rent until he got his first decent car to drive to and from work and then charged him small amount of rent to save for apt. Six months later he moved out and never looked back. The way I did mine was I'd say if you don't put your clothes in the hamper they won't get washed and then you'll have to do it. Sue enough that is what I did. He'd come in "where is so and so shirt". I'd say dirty in your room and then I taught him to wash the load. Only had to tell him one time and the clothes were in the hamper and not strewn everywhere next time.

Nancy -- at my high school, the principal and the assistant principal were expected to teach at least one course each year in order to keep their teaching licenses. I think this was great because they always understood what it was like to be in the classroom.

The last two principals that I have had spent less than 6 years in a classroom. I've had 21 years experience. And heaven knows that if I open my mouth to share something, I sound like I'm against change -- which I'm not.

I also wish that legislators would throw their ideas to real live teachers before introducing them on the floor of the General Assembly.

Ladyblue -- I'm not certain you can make someone too independent. :-)

My parents purchased a set of luggage for each of their children as a high school graduation present. We were then informed it was time to pack them and move out. I thought that this was abuse at the time, but now I'm glad that they did this!
