Did you know North Carolina is sometimes visited by hummingbirds other than the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (shown in the picture)? Here in North Carolina, Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds have long been the one type of hummingbird expected to visit each summer.
Alas! North Carolina has a wide variety of vagrant hummingbirds! That is, these hummingbirds visit North Carolina unexpectedly, as their typical range does not include this area of the country.
Here's a list of vagrant hummingbird species sighted in NC, according to research at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh:
- Allen's Hummingbird
- Anna's Hummingbird
- Black Chinned Hummingbird
- Blue Throated Hummingbird
- Broad Billed Hummingbird
- Broad Tailed Hummingbird
- Buff Bellied Hummingbird
- Calliope Hummingbird
- Green Violet Eared Hummingbird
- Green Breasted Mango Hummingbird
- Rufous Hummingbird
The most commonly sighted non-ruby-throated hummingbird? The Rufous Hummingbird, which has increasingly retreated to the Southeastern United States over the past few decades during the winter. That's right -- the winter! If you're lucky, you can spot hummingbirds in your backyard year-round right here in North Carolina. Tell your neighbors -- I bet they'd be surprised!
If you've ever seen a vagrant species of hummingbird in North Carolina, share your stories (and photos) with us on GOLO!

The "common" type (hourglass) type if you hang it the wind can make it blow out the sugar water. If you put it on a post you can put a baffle on the post so they can't climb the post (watch for limbs above so they can't jump from above).
OR
Window mount suction mount.
With the new camera I have I now can get good shots compared to my old camera. I can now get the wings "still" compared to blurred.
See what the the stores have and ask!! They usually are helpful.
