Hopping from one row to the next in the garden was a classic pastime when I was a kid. Especially when my parents or grandparents were steadily picking butterbeans or digging for potatoes!
One day at my aunt's house, my uncle challened me to a foot race. Lo-and-behold, I took the innovative approach and cut through the corner of the yard instead of staying on the path (hey -- nobody said we had to stay on the path! The only rules were, "First person to the bumper of the car wins!")
Well, I cut through the corner of the yard. It just so happened my aunt's garden was in that corner of the yard. I cleared the first row, but found my legs a little too short to clear the next five rows. These were not your usual garden rows! These were the deepest rows I had ever seen, and I had gotten caught in the middle. My legs could barely clear each hill, and I tried not to upset any of the cabbage planted there. My pace slowed to a crawl as my uncle rounded the corner by the car.
Guess who won? Not me...
